"Sarge" Drops By the Show
posted: 6/13/2006 at 7:44 AM

I told you yesterday we were supposed to host the radio show last night from PGE Park, during the Portland Beavers game against Tucson. But, due to the afternoon rain, lightning, and wind, we ran for the safe cover of our KXL studio and hosted the show there. We kind of figured that one of the places you didn't want to be during a lightning storm was near a bunch of electronic equipment, that also happens to be connected to your head.

We had several great interviews on Courtside Monday Night presented by L.A. Weight Loss last night (I know that's a mouthful.. try saying it 20 times a night). Head coach Nate McMillan joined us off the top of the show and you could tell he hadn't been on in a few weeks. He is so good in these settings and it doesn't take many questions to fill a 30-minute interview with him. Talk about giving complete answers.

To listen to any of the interviews from last night's show, download the interview (mp3) or subscribe to the podcast to get all the interviews (podcast is free through iTunes).

Nate just returned from the Orlando pre-draft camp and we spent some time talking about that experience, and talked about the pre-draft workouts in general. I think this entire process is pretty interesting, and is so vital to where a team decides to go in the draft. Nate compared it to a job interview, and said he pays attention to every detail about a player. Not only is he talking about the actual workout, but also the interview after, and how the player carries himself.

We also touched on the NBA Finals with McMillan, and the biggest thing he said he's taking out of this is the need for outside shooting. Miami's lack of it has allowed Dallas to double Shaq and dared the Heat to beat them from the perimeter.

At the end of the interview with Nate, I told him we were having Joel Przybilla on the show a little later and he said he wanted to call back into the show and help "triple team" Joel. I wasn't sure if he'd actually do it. Not only did he do it, but he came on the show as "Sarge" from Portland, and disguised his voice for about the first minute. Joel knew he was being set up but didn't know who he was talking to.

McMillan joked with Przybilla several times to just sign the document he was going to send him, and it would all be over. Joel enjoy talking to his coach, and said he isn't enjoying all the uncertainty that comes with being an unrestricted free agent. He said he has no intention of dragging this out past July 12th, the day the signing period begins. Joel says he's told his agent he's going to be ready to make a decision by then. Click here for the full "triple team" interview (free mp3) or download the podcast through iTunes (free).

Our final guest last night was draft expert Chris Montor. We went through the big workouts that are coming up, how the final couple of weeks before the draft would shake out, and talked about all the adjustments made to mock drafts in these final weeks. Montor was at the Orlando camp as well, and we spent some time talking about that. Click here to download the interview with Chris Monter or download the podcast with all the interviews through iTunes (free).

A reminder.. we're taking the radio show on the road for the NBA Draft, on Wednesday June 28th. Our draft party is set for Outback Steakhouse in Tualatin. It's going to be a huge event, held in a tent in the parking lot. We'll be on the air starting at 4 o'clock, and will basically go as long as we want. Make your plans to join us. We had over 1,000 people at last year's event, and this will likely be even bigger.

Love the "New" website! And the blog.
It has been difficult to be a fan for a while, but maybe we have turned a corner. "Sarge" is a welcome addition. Too many want immediate results in the won-lost column, when "doing it right" takes time. Sargent Nate will get it done right.
