A Big Day at the Reserve
posted: 9/18/2006 at 10:38 PM

Even if the rain had stayed around it would have been a great golf tournament, but right on cue, the clouds parted, and the sun was out most of the day. It was the 5th annual Bell Blazers Classic, out at the Reserve in Aloha. Following the tournament, we hosted Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, live from the clubhouse.

Speaking of the weather, we all tend to toss our local weather forecasters under the bus when we're suprised by rain on a day when we have plans outside. But, I will say that KGW's Ron Pivo, who played in the tournament, was on the driving range before the tournament giving props to his station's forecasters. Pivo was telling us all his people nailed it, and the sun was out by noon. Nice going folks. And, I just wanted to let you know that Ron had your back today. I love that kind of chemistry in a news department. Pivo was on my team several years back in this tournament, and we won it, in the rain, by the way.

We had a huge turnout, as always, and it was great to see some Trail Blazer alums on hand to help the cause. Dan Dickau played, and told me when I saw him on the course that he was "way too stiff and sore to be playing decent golf." I also spent some time talking with Jerome Kersey and Jim Paxson. Pax, who did some work last year with NBA TV, told me he's now working as a consultant for the Chicago Bulls. It'll allow him to continue to live in Portland, which he loves, and will also be working for his brother, John.

Blazers player personnel director Kevin Pritchard (pictured on the right) gave an inspired talk at the post-golf dinner. If this basketball thing doesn't work out, Kevin could probably get work as a motivational speaker. I should mention that KP played behind my group in the scramble, and that he drove the par-4 7th hole. He did this about 15 minutes after I had done the same thing. He wanted to make sure that everyone knew my ball was about 30 feet from the hole, and his was about 10. I must add that he used a driver, and I used a 5-wood. I'm not sure if he played from the ladies' tees, but we're checking the videotape. Of course, we'll need to find conclusive evidence on the replay to erase the eagle his team recorded.

We got off the course a little late, and I want to thank Brian Wheeler for getting Courtside off to a flying start. He had Dickau on the show before I joined a little after 6:30. To hear his interview with Dan,click here. We also had a chance to talk with Trail Blazers lead assistant coach Dean Demopoulos later in the program. To hear the interview with Dean, click here. Coach D talked about the great workouts that continue, and talked about his impressions of Sergio Rodriguez, among others.

During all of this golf last night, Joel Przybilla was hard at work at the Trail Blazers practice facility. As I mentioned yesterday, he got into town on Sunday night, and has been getting settled in a home he and his wife, Noelle, just purchased. She dropped him off at the facility and then went on a shopping spree. That's always dangerous. It's nice to have them back in town.

The workouts and pick-up games will continue tomorrow for the Blazers. Among the players who will be active tomorrow will be veteran guard Anthony Carter. The seven-year veteran played with Minnesota last season, and is now a free agent. The Blazers are giving him a second look and he could get an invite to training camp. I'll keep you up to date on that.

Thanks for getting right on the links for the show, Mike. It's much appreciated. However, i know you've been experimenting with different colors for your links. If bold white isn't good enough, I have the obvious question of why not use red? You know, the whole blazer color thing? Again, Mike, this is serious stuff. Just wondering.

BTW, Mike, are you afraid of the driver?

Okay mrblazer, red it is.

And, I love the driver. But, the hole was only 265 yards long, and driver wasn't necessary. Well, I guess for Pritchard it was.

what color are the uniforms going to be (on the road)? It seems that most of the pictures Ive seen of the players are in red roads..

also, you ever going to get to my questions? ;)

btw, nice dig you got in there in the other comment. Yes, I know what suntan lotion is. Just remember, Im not a football fan, nor am I a san dieogoanaianian. So to me, going to a sporting event means indoors and usually a Blazer game.

btw, this season cannot start soon enough. I haven't been this desperate (keep your sarcasm to yourselfs, folks) for the blazers season since I was in the 6th grade.

lo those many many many many many many many MANY years ago. crap, that was 18 seasons ago.

My 6th grade is now old enough to vote.
