Pritchard Discusses Magloire Acquisition
posted: 7/31/2006 at 10:44 PM

First of all, thanks for all of your comments in the past couple of days. It's great to think that we're just entering the month of August and there is such heated debate involving the Trail Blazers. Even if you haven't agreed with all the moves (and it appears most of you have), you have to admit that the front office has been proactive and very agressive in trying to get this team back in the playoff hunt. That's what most of you were asking for following last season's disappointing finish.

On Monday the rumored trade became official, as the Blazers and Bucks completed the deal that send Steve Blake, Brian Skinner, and Ha Seung-Jin to Milwaukee, in exchange for Jamaal Magloire.

Last night the Blazers director of player personnel, Kevin Pritchard, joined us on Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss to discuss the trade. Kevin talked about the addition of Magloire, why the Blazers decided to pull the trigger on the deal, and even discussed what the immediate future could hold. He said, "our frontline is now ready to compete with some of the best the Western Conference has to offer."

To hear the entire Pritchard interview, which lasted most of the first half-hour of the program, click here.

As you will hear, Pritchard spent a lot of time discussing how this was not an easy decision to make, especially when it came to parting ways with Steve Blake. As we have talked about, Blake did everything that was asked of him and more, in his time with the Blazers. I talked to Kevin last week, when this trade was being discussed, and he told me how difficult it was going to be trading Steve, who was his first-ever signee as an executive. In the end, Kevin was able to put his emotions aside, and just "had to do what was best for the franchise."

There have also been a lot of questions about Magloire's immediate future in Portland, and whether or not this is just a prelude to a bigger trade. Pritchard tried to put some of those rumors to rest. Anything can happen, of course, but Kevin sounded like he expects Magloire to definitely play for the Blazers this season. He's a valuable asset, especially given the fact that he's in the last year of his contract and will be a unrestricted free agent after the season. The Blazers, however, own his "Bird rights" and those are transferrable to any team that potentially trades for him. That just means the team that possesses him at the end of the season will be able to exceed the salary cap to re-sign him (my earlier post was incorrect on this).

Magloire is a beast inside, and gives the Blazers even more defense and rebounding. And, he's not a bad offensive player in the paint. As he showed in Milwaukee last season, Magloire can also play the power forward position, and is capable of backing up Zach Randolph at the 4. Teams are always after flexibility, and this acquisition gives them that. When you get it in a big guy, all the better.

I was planning on running my interview with Zach from last week when I was in Atlanta, but we got so many calls and e-mails I just ran out of time. I do want to make it available to you here. Click here for my one-on-one with Zach. I also got a chance to spend some time with Jarrett Jack in Atlanta, and for that interview click here.

We were hoping to get Magloire on the radio show, but he wasn't available. We'll try and get him on next week. Also, check back here for an update on the press conference announcing Magloire to Portland. It's not set yet, but will be soon. Next week I also plan on getting Dan Dickau on the program. He joined us in Las Vegas, but I'd like to get him again for next week. Dickau played with Magloire in New Orleans, when both of them had breakout seasons. He'll give us an idea of what we can expect. We'll also get an update on Dan's surgically-repaired Achilles tendon. He told me at a golf tournament recently (he's a 5 handicap, by the way) that he expects to be 100 percent by training camp. Blake's departure will obviously create a bigger opportunity for Dickau.

Thanks for your involvement in the radio show, and in the blog. Keep the comments coming, and I'll respond to as many as I can. I'll also keep you up to date on anything else going on this week, including the Magloire press conference.

Thank you all Portland and all of the front office workers! I love this trade. Hopefully it will get Zach off of his lazy a** and lose whight and wokr harder, and hopefully it will mean that Mills will be gone, or vis versa, one of them 2 need to get outta town. I can't wait to see, Aldridge working his a** off with Joel and Jamaal. Put Martell and Roy in the line-up and let them do there magic. All I know out of the last 6 years, I am the most excited about this season, and the new players. I also hope that Portland will be able to resign Jamaal this off season, and that he will see that this area loves there basketball, there team, there players!

This transaction is super for Sergio. I'm very happy about that, because it means that Portland is really interested in Sergio. Now he will have to fight with Jack and Dickau to get as minutes as possible, but why he couldn't be the starting point guard????? I'm very excited about the new season!!!! When will be the official Sergio's 11 jersey available??? I'm crazy about getting it!!!

Mike, Bird rights do not give the team the right to match any offer. That would be restricted free agency. Bird rights allow a team to exceed the salary cap to re-sign the player, thus offering more potentially than many other teams can do.

Mike, i think you may have been mistaken about Mags' contract situation. Won't he be an unrestricted free agent at the season's end? Meaning even if the team who owns his "bird rights" matches another team's offer, Mags can decide to play wherever he wants. Also, his "bird rights" owner can opt to not only match another team's offer but also go as high as the maximum length and salary for his situation as a player. I think that is correct, right?

Anyway, you wrote that the "entire" Pritchard interview is available, but only half of it is available to me. I was a little surprised to hear KP say that most of this trade was orchestrated by Steve Patterson. I guess he is the acting GM.

Can we get an update on the "search" for our next GM. Don't tell me this is the kind of thing that is kept secret like it's a matter of national security, is it? Can we at least be told if the process has started?

It seemed like of Pritchard's acquisitions, Blake bought into the new notion of the Blazers as a 'family' more than anyone.

As alluded to in the Oregonian, it seems that Blake was pretty hurt by the trade, especially given his wifes September due date.

Has anything been said by the Blazers organization to Steve Blake along the lines of 'we want you to sign with us' next year? Or does Dickau's contract (having 2 seasons left) and the drafting of Sergio essentially rule out this classy guy coming back to the team?

As much I am excited about obtaining Magloire, I will miss Steve Blake. I feel really bad for Blake. He and his wife loved it here. They embraced the community, and became very active within it both publicly and privately.

I realize this is a busines, and trades are sometimes a harsh reality. And, all in all, I'd love to have Blakes troubles; Making large amounts of money to play a game I love, married to a beuatifull woman, expecting my first child, and competing for the starting point guard position on a playoff team.

It does suck though. I'll miss you Mr. Blake, and I think the team will too.

Lee D, and Mr.Blazer,

You guys are correct on Magloire's contract situation. I was wrong. Reading it again, it's pretty obvious. I guess it was a late night, and having a one-year old, they have been early mornings too.
Thanks for the correction.

I'm just not sure what the point of this trade is when compared to the other moves we have made in this offseason. We drafted LaMarcus Aldridge, brought in Raef LaFrentz, re-signed Joel Przybilla and already had Zach Randolph. I just don't see how this group can co-exist with the bringing in of Jamaal Magloire. When you consider that Randolph, Przybilla and Magloire will eat up a huge portion of those minutes, where does that leave the others?

I guess my question is why did we really draft LaMarcus if we were just going to bring in another big anyway? Supposedly we have a problem at SF (two actually, considering that Darius Miles is STILL on the team), so why didn't we instead take a guy like Adam Morrison would could immediately fill a void on this team? Maybe Pritchard & Co. will prove me wrong in the end, and I hope they do. But when players like Steve Blake leave the team and guys like Darius Miles remain on it, it makes you wonder why the priorities aren't in order.

Hmmm, gotta say jury out. For me it is a wait and see. No question Magloire is a good grab, but Blake could have been a poster child for what portland is trying to do. Consistant good smart play combined with a quality person. Blake was not only a fan favorite, he had good offence, defence, and game savy. I know we might have lost him to free agency anyways, but i still think we should have kept him. Look what loyalty brought us with Joel, and loyalty is a two way street. No dis on Mags, but I don't like it.

Whats done is done. Now it looks on paper that we have a deep talented frontcourt. The jury will rule with chemistry. Right now, the team has no leader. When the team's leader emerges next year it won't nescesarily be the team captain, the veteran, or the most talented player. The leader will be the one everyone follows. Will Miles still be around acting like he deserves better without earning it? Will one of our two starting centers be happy to come off the bench? Can Zack get back to the hustle, 2nd chance- offensive rebounding, 6th man of the year that earned the contract he has or will he keep trying to be something different? While all this is going on which one of these vererans will the incredibly talented young people we have start to watch and learn from?

My hope is that either the trading isn't done yet, or Mags and Joel become inseperable partners, even with the depth Nate still gets Aldridge enough playtime to maximize his development, (if they stay) Zack and Miles grow up (Zack so far seems to be on the right track), Jack, Outlaw, and Webster have breakout years, and -knock on wood- Roy not only develops into the best player on the team, but his natural leadership tendancies bring the team to follow his lead.

K with these doubters ubove. Hmm lets see boys Miles has a very hard to trade contract for one. blake didn't. 2 Joel is an injury prone player. Jammal played 82 games last year. 3. Blake was not the future. Jack, Sergio are. 4. Mcmillian said Aldrige was "very raw" so following Jammal and Joel will be good for him. So yes geniuses the blazers priorities are in the right order. Mike thanks for these blogs.

I think this was a good trade. It was good to get rid of Ha he just isnt developing the way they had hoped. I will miss steve but I think we have enough talent at that position. Now if we can just rid ourselves of Zach and Darius we would really be moving in a postive direction!!

The Blazers have the right foot forward and the management team is doing their job as well. I still believe from a marketing standpoint that we need a "STAR" player to sell tickets and get us back to the promsied land. With the tools and depth in place, we need to make a run at AI or baron Davis, someone with marketablilty and a champions poise. Thanks MB

Of all the people to get let go, Steve Blake? Man that one hurts. Watching the games when Steve was in them he was the heart and soul of that team. His unselfish play was what kept them in many a game last season with the lackluster effort that most of the team was giving last season.

Steve will be missed.

Two main points here: 1, I worried earlier on this site about the imbalanced roster this trade created and expressed the hope that a follow-up trade will correct the imbalance. But I see criticism and want to say that, overall, I am very impressed by the team's moves in the offseason. Good work. And good blog, Mike.

2, Blazer Employee wrote about greatness, and was right about its importance. Greatness, however, must come from within an organization. For one thing, to build a team around a great player or two takes time (years). Also, that team that you build around the great player requires time to develop chemistry and on-court cohesion. Third, a truly great player WILL NOT be traded, or if so, very rarely and for half a team. The Blazers are approaching greatness the right way. Having committed to a rebuilding process, they have given themselves a luxury: time. So now they have picked up Aldridge and Roy through the draft to complement Webster. For the Blazers to be a great team, it is from here that their great player(s) must emerge. AI or Baron Davis would not take this team to the "promised land" - but maybe Aldridge, Webster, and/or Roy will. In the meantime, management is building a decent team around them. Have patience.

Magloire Trade Official
posted: at 12:39 PM

This morning the Trail Blazers made it official and announced they have acquired former Eastern Conference All-Star Jamaal Magloire in a three-for-one deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. Going to Milwaukee from Portland are Steve Blake, Brian Skinner, and Ha Seung-Jin.

The details of the actual trade were hammered out before the weekend, and originally surfaced in the Milwaukee media last Thursday. Shortly after reports of the trade were everywhere in Portland, so the trade wasn't a huge suprise to most by today.

The Bucks had been wanting to move Magloire, and with the addition of Charlie Villanueva, acquire in a trade with Toronto, gives them the abilty to now move Andrew Bogut, the number-one pick in last year's draft, back to his natural center position. The trade with Toronto cost the Bucks their starting point guard, T.J. Ford, and that left them in need of a point guard. They became focused on acquiring Portland's Steve Blake, and he's now expected to battle for the starting job in Milwaukee with Maurice Williams.

Magloire, who only spent one season with the Bucks, started all 82 games last season and led the Bucks to a playoff birth. He was also a member of the 2004 Eastern Conference All-Star team, and led the east with 19 points and 8 rebounds in that game. He'll add to the Blazers already talented front line, and will battle for minutes at both the power forward position and center spot.

This trade gives Portland tremendous flexibility at the center position. Keep in mind, a little over a month ago the Blazers faced the prospect of having only two centers, Ha, and Brian Skinner. Now, they've got Przybilla, who was re-signed, Raef LaFrentz, Magloire, and LaMarcus Aldridge.

It has also helped alleviate a log jam at the point guard position. It wasn't easy for the Blazers to trade away Blake, who was very popular in the community, and had a breakout season last year, but with Jarrett Jack nearing 100 percent on his surgically-repaired ankle, along with Sergio Rodriguez, Dan Dickau, and Brandon Roy showing the world at summer league he can certainly handle playing some point, the move was too good to pass up.

Tonight we'll have much, much more on all of this on Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss. The show will air from 6pm to 7 on KXL-AM 750 in the Portland area, and will also be available live on kxl.com. The next four Courtside shows will be just hour-long programs, and then will return to the normal two-hour show after that. Kevin Pritchard will be on with us tonight at 6:05, and we'll get all of his thoughts, and what went on behind the scenes in getting this deal put together. We're also trying to get Magloire on, but his availability at this point is up in the air. We'll know more tonight.

If you miss the interviews live tonight, check back here later tonight and tomorrow, as I'll have links to them all.

I am extremely happy about this. Jammal is a GOOD solid center. Maybe he should start over pryz. Don't know yet. Hes a 9 points 9 rebounds guy. Hustles. Like ruben patterson though he wants minuets and will complain if not given them. This frees up space though and like u said Mike frees up the point guard jam a little. I want to see Jack and spanish chocolate play. Poor Aldrige though. Hes really going to have to fight for minuets. Well I am very proud of the organization right now and they are working their butts off to win. Thats what matters to me.

Magloire: Big Benefit!
This should really help the Blazers out! The log jam of PG's will be a little cleared up. However, Aldridge wont get as much playing time, but he is young and underweight and could use time anyways. Overall, I do think that this trade will help us win more games.

This makes the roster an imbalanced mess. I can already foresee several unhappy malcontents, Magloire first among them. A solid point-guard tandem, featuring Steve Blake - a good-guy, clutch player who was good in the community and would have happily come off the bench with the continued emergence of Jack - is now broken up. This had BETTER be the precursor to another trade that will correct the problems created by this one. If not, a misguided Whitsitt-style disappointment. If so, it could turn out great.

How can anyone complain about this one? We gave up a point guard who had a career year and was a great guy, but big men just don't become available everyday. Blake will never reach All-Star status and Jamaal already has. It is a no-brainer. The only way you can question this move is if you are/were a Bucks fan.

this deal is definitely one in the blazer's favor, but they obviously have a great deal of confidence in JJ being the man at the 1 spot, and roy backing him up. aldridge was never going to get lots of minutes this year, but now has a great bunch of guys to learn from. i cant see any negatives in this deal, because this really gives the blazers the best front court in the division.

keep up the great work mike!

Portland now has a solid team. I dont think Ha will ever be more than a third string C, if he can make it that far. I dont get people complaining that now there is a logjam at the 5?? The Blazers now have 5 players they can USE at the 5, but Raef will most likely back up at the 4 and Aldridge is also a 4 that may be able to play some 5. Blake was a good guy that I wish could have stayed, but this is a trade that could not be passed up. I am starting to get excited about the blazers for the first time in several years.

Ha Seung Jin? Fine. But only because it means more playing time for him. I felt that Skinner had established his role akin to Reuben Patterson in driving to the board and firing up the team. PG log jam? What log jam? Blake is gone … Telfair is gone …
Hey, why don’t you trade Juan away in the midst of your breakdown: let’s make it a Trifecta. I mean, how many layers of the onion have to be peeled? Was I naive in assuming that a multi-year contract for Joel translated into a starting position? Now what? I don’t think the team will ever achieve its former greatness until the “Braille –Mazers” in the front office stop feeling their way around the market, focus on capital (as opposed to liquid) assets, and start valuing Chemistry over Cash. (And I thought Wittsit was bad.) I got a new one: Fire Patterson. Fans, I got news. Just because a player is an All-Star for someone else’s team, doesn’t mean he’ll be one for yours.

P.S. Remember the Maine (and “The Pippen”) !!!

6:18 PM
Lance said...

Pippen was always a number two guy to MJ and was only as good as he was because of MJ. Pippen came along towards the end of his career and nobody expected him to carry the team, only help guide it. I was on a Bucks blog page and not one person thought this was even close to a good deal for them, and that was on Friday when it was just a rumor. There is absolutely NO downside to this deal. Jamaale doesn't have to be an All-Star for this trade to work. He just has to do the work required of him...rebound and play 'D'. I am amazed how people have ripped the Blazers for all the bad character people over the last few years and now they have made great strides to change that now they complain about something else. Not only have they changed the character, but they added talent which is not an easy thing to do.

Be happy. We are moving in the right direction.

GroceryBag,
You have got to be kidding me? This is a terrific move for the organization. We bring in a talented player as well as a good guy. Mags complained about playing time as his was diminished in the playoffs to give the youth movement (i.e., Bogut) some experience. I'm not too worried about a player who wants to play in the playoffs after starting every game, it's what we like to call a competitor. Plus, now we have a big who can teach the young guys a thing or two about playing in the paint. I'll miss Blake, but not enough to not want Mags on this roster.

I am excited to see an "all star talent" big man coming to P-Town, however I see a familiar situation developing here that I dont think we as fans can ignore. Aldridge is now the new Jermaine O'Neil. I see the Blazers doing what they always have done, playing the older vet in place of an emerging young talent just to bring the franchise back to the "close but no cigar" days so they can make their money. If this club is serious about being winners again and not just resembling being winners, we need to take this young Aldridge and play him till he becomes what he eventually will be... The starting all star center for the East. Miss you Jermaine.

What we have is more flexability now. As said, Ha will never be more than a 3rd stringer. Skinner has played on 7 teams now, and Blake, though good and positive had to be traded to make the deal pan out. Now that Roy proved he can play point and Sergio coming to town, Blakes loss can be more easily absorbed.

Our flexibility really comes at the 4-5. Aldrige will more than likely be brought on slowly unless they can deal Randolph. Raef can play the 4-5, but now seems to lean more to the 4. Magaloire could battle Pryzbilla for the starting spot.

One must wonder if one more trade is in the works. Raef or Jamaal and maybe Miles for somebody? Who knows, but the consensus is that we aren't done yet.

I'm loving this offseason so far, it'll be a brand new team by fall.

I am most definitely curious to see what the Blazers starting lineup will look like this year. I'm thinking somewhere alone the lines of Jarret Jack/Brandon Roy at PG. Juan Dixon/Brandon Roy at the two hole. I'm kind of confused what the Blazers will do with the three spot. Maybe Martell? Maybe Z-Bo will play as the Small Forward and the Blazers will go with Jamaal and Przybilla in the last two spots? Maybe Portland will make another move before the season starts to clear up some of these questions?

Big Monday Planned in Blazerville
posted: 7/30/2006 at 10:23 PM

What an amazing five weeks this has been for the Portland Trail Blazers. It seems like an awfully long time ago that we were hearing about the six draft-day trades made by the Blazers. That day ended with Portland having four first-round picks- LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy, Sergio Rodriguez, and Joel Freeland. But, so much has happened since, and Monday will be another huge day for the franchise.

After the draft we learned on July 4th, Joel Przybilla would be re-signing with the Trail Blazers. Not many people expected that. We then went to summer league in Las Vegas. Not many expected Brandon Roy to have the kind of week he did. Last week I flew to Atlanta to see Zach Randolph and Jarrett Jack. Not many people expected to see Zach in such great shape, or expected Jarrett to be ahead of schedule on his recovery from ankle surgery like he is. And, not many expected what will be coming out on Monday. Do we dare ask, "what's next?"

It's very difficult to keep things quiet in this day and age, and I'd be insulting your intelligence to act like you don't know what's coming on Monday. I've received so many e-mails in the past few days, and I'm sorry I've been unable to answer them. They've all been asking pretty much the same question. Monday, you'll get the answers. And, then it'll be fun, because on our Courtside Monday Night radio show, we'll reveal everything to you, talk to player personnel director Kevin Pritchard, and will even perhaps have another suprise guest or two on the show.

The radio show starts at 6 pm on KXL-AM 750 in the Portland area, and if you're outside the listening area, as always, you can log on to kxl.com and hear the show live. You'll want to hear this one. I do need to let you know that the radio show is going to be reduced to one hour for the next four shows. This was planned a while back, and usually the month of August is pretty quiet. Even though tomorrow night's show will be technically a July show, it gets included in this, and it's going to be hard to get everything taken care of in just an hour tomorrow night.

The only thing I can officially tell you is, Pritchard will be on at 6:05, right off the top of the show. We'll let him make the special announcement, and then we'll get to everything else.

I talked to Kevin this afternoon at the Trail Blazers 3-on-3 Street Jam, and I can tell you he'll have a lot to say. He's been very busy, as you know, and I always love hearing the story behind the story. We'll get that tomorrow night. We'll have questions, and for the first time since all of this stuff hit the media, we'll have official answers. Congratulations will also be in order. Get your tickets yet?

they are saying NBA "GMS" are saying any deal wont get done we will not dump Miles unless we add Adridge. They say that is why we got Magliore to cover our butts! Help me out! Pray or something! I know we gotta be left in the dark but I just got up, its 5am central in KC and its still dark outside!! Pritchard wouldnt do this would he? I'll be listening to your streamcast!

Hi Mike,

Isn't it great that we made the trade for *CENSORED*! *DELETED* will add so much to the Blazers' *EDITED*.

That's a great picture of *WITHHELD*, too.

Mike, I feel kind of bad for you in situations like this, especially when it happens on a weekend. You hear all these details first, but you can't say a word about it until the NBA League Office opens on Monday morning at 9AM to process the paperwork. I know you have to be dying to talk about the *EXPURGATED* deal.

I can't wait to *BLEEP* in a Blazers Uniform!

By the way, considering recent developments, could you ask Kevin Pritchard tonight if we might be seeing LaMarcus Aldridge occasionally getting minutes at SF against bigger line-ups? Thanks.

Mike,
I haven't been writing lately, but of course i have still been reading. First thing at work this morning i about had a heart attack reading your cliff haanger of a blog. I CANNOT wait until tonight. Canzano's article in today's Oregonian put some ideas into my head as well, but lately I have more faith than usual in my Blazers. Finally, i think they realized major changes were needed. and they've made so many already. and now even more. how lucky for those blazer fans, those TRUE blazer fans, like you and i that we are here to witness the wild ride of this off-season. i can't wait for your show tonight. thanks for everything mike!

Kansagonian,

Aldridge isn't going anywhere, don't worry. This deal has nothing to do with that. I wouldn't look for LaMarcus to get a ton of minutes right off the bat, but his upside is tremendous. That's why the team worked so hard to move up to #2 to select him. By the way, is it true that people from Kansas are taking over the world? That's what Pritchard told me yesterday.

Afs,

Nobody censored me. That was just me at 11pm last night with photoshop, trying to be creative. I think I failed. This has not been a very well-kept secret and I was just having some fun with it. Yes, I'm looking forward to talking in detail tonight on the show.

Thanks for all your comments..

Great job as usual. I think the magloire trade is a great one. It will definitely help balance out the roster. I think Brandon Roy is going to be an outstanding player but i still think trading Telfair will come back to haunt us. Kinda how Jermaine Oneal did. Oh well, now that Telfair's gone keep the trades coming!!!

Hey Mike!

Are you allowed to talk about whether Portland intends to keep Magloire or use him as trade bait?

Will you ask Pritchard how Joel feels about the trade tonight please.

Also, Raef has to be a little skeptical... It seems like he's the obvious candidate to be the odd man out:
Zach - 35 minutes at PF.
Aldridge - 13 minutes at PF.
Magloire - 28 minutes at C.
Joel - 20 minutes at C.

Thoughts?

Another Day of Work for Zach and JJ
posted: 7/25/2006 at 8:06 PM

It was our second day in Atlanta and we were fortunate enough to be able to attend workouts for two very important Trail Blazers. Both players, as you know, are not only working to get ready for the NBA season, but are also rehabbing. Zach Randolph had knee surgery before last season, and was never close to being 100 percent last year, and Jarrett Jack, who had surgery on his ankle earlier this summer, has made tremendous progress and is well ahead of schedule in his process.

I'll start first with Zach. He is as fit as I have seen him, and his desire and self-awareness, is also extremely healthy. We were shooting video of Zach and interviewed him for a story we're putting together. One thing he kept telling me today is that he feels "brand new," and is very happy to be working pain free. He's also thinner and stronger than I have seen him. I took some photos of his workout session today and his weight session, and you can view those photos by clicking here.

You'll also see some photos in there of Zach's daughter, McKinley, who turns one on Friday. Zach took us back to his hotel after the workout and we got a chance to see him with McKinley. You've never seen a prouder father, and it was fun to see him follow her around, up and down the hallway at the hotel. These are moments I wish all Zach fans could witness. One thing that can't be argued is that Zach has a big heart and is a very good guy. He's the first to admit he hasn't always made the best choices in certain situations, but if you spend time around him you can't help but like him.

Blazers player development/assistant coach Bill Bayno put Zach through a very tough workout today on the campus of Georgia Tech University. They went through shooting drills, post-up moves (with the right hand, Zach's weak hand, almost exclusively), and ran some full court conditioning exercises. Bayno told me it was Zach who suggested he run the brutal end-to-end drills.

He told us several times, during his water breaks, that he couldn't do this kind of a workout last summer while he was recovering from knee surgery. He was basically stuck riding a bike and that was about it. Zach says he wasn't anywhere near full strength when the season began last year, and that the knee gave him trouble from time to time. It just wasn't strong enough. Now, with the help of strength coach Bobby Medina, who's also here in Atlanta, they are getting the knee "better than new." As I mentioned earlier, the rest of Zach's body is in phenominal shape. I'm sure you'll notice that looking at the pictures.

Bayno, who will continue to work with Zach for the rest of the week in Atlanta, told me his goal is to help Zach to a "career year." He says his post moves are so quick and strong at this point, and that his touch around the basket, as we all know, is something you just can't coach. Some complained last season that Zach ended up settling for the outside shot too often, and he agrees with that. Medina explained that today by saying Zach's knee was getting worn down in the post, where it took a beating. Randolph was also double-teammed all the time, and teams tried to attack him physically. Medina's goal is to get Zach strong enough to wage war in the paint this season, and not have to go outside as much.

Both Medina and Bayno told us several times how great it's been working with Zach, and how committed he is to getting himself in the best possible shape. Keep in mind, this is July. "We're not going to have any steps backwards this summer," promises Bayno. Both also said that Zach is carrying himself with the maturity of a veteran star, and truly appears ready to have a breakout season.

As for Jarrett Jack, he is mixing workouts in with his class load at Georgia Tech. He made a promise to his mother, after he declared himself an early-entry candidate for last year's NBA Draft, that he'd continue with his studies and would earn a degree. He told me this evening he's about 7 classes shy of earning a degree in Business. He's got finals coming up next week.

Jarrett's workout tonight was on Cremins Court on the Georgia Tech campus, the home of the Ramblin Wreck. We were the only people in the arena, and I was even instructed earlier in the day by an official how to turn the lights out when we left. I talked with Jarrett about playing on the court where he starred for GT. He said that, yes, he does get a lot of attention on campus, and is truly the BMOC. He said it's not unusual for students to ask for autographs and pictures while he's walking to class. Jarrett lives in a condo on campus, one street away from the basketball arena. He's got a roommate, who's also a student.

In 2004, as a sophomore, Jack led Georgia Tech to the Final Four. His junior season ended on a sour note. In the 2005 ACC Tournament Jack injured his ankle, and then played his first NBA season basically on one leg. Earlier this summer he had surgery on that ankle. Doctors were amazed with what they found during the surgery. Medina told us that doctors said 85 percent of the tissue in Jarrett's ankle was "unhealthy tissue" and they wondered how he was able to play at all. The ankle isn't 100 percent yet, but Jack says it's getting there. Just this week he was cleared to play full-court hoops. He's been doing that in the mornings here in Atlanta with some other NBA and college players.

The one consistent theme we continue to hear, from all these players, is that they're coming to Portland earlier than usual to get ready for the NBA season. By the first of September just about every player will be in Portland, playing, and getting set for training camp. Jarrett said he'll be in Portland on September 3rd. He's got tickets to Georgia Tech's first football game, versus Notre Dame, on September 2nd here in Atlanta.

Thanks to Bill Bayno, Bob Medina, and Darnell Valentine for being so accomodating here in Atlanta. Also, thanks to my travelling partners, TV producer Scott Zachry, and photographer Jeff Curtin. Curtin speaks NASCAR, so he gets along well here in the South. After a near crash in our mini-van, while flying through downtown Atlanta, he uttered "hey, rubbin's racin'!" 'Nuff said.

Hey MB,

I'm getting really excited about JJ's progress.

Lets hope he kicks butt this year, and remind him how much we hate the Lakers. Ask him what school Georgia Tech students hate the most, and say thats 1/6th the hatred we have for the Lakers.

(ok, thats probably not true, but just tell him we'd love it if he had huge games against the Lakers and lead us to wins against them. Mother of Pete, we hate the Lakers.)

Was it a mistake for Jack to play last year on his injured ankle? Would it been 85% unhealthy tissue if he didn't play and had the surgery earlier? Will this ankle be a chronic problem for him or should this take care of it?

Btw, I really respect him for playing injured last year and am a big fan of his, so don't get me wrong I'm just wonder if it would have been best for him not to do it.

Zach looks really great! He looks and sounds like he's dedicated to having a great season. I'm a big fan of his as well and look forward to seeing him tear it up this season!

You can delete this part but why do I have to make a blog of my own just to make a simple post? I had a user name but it wouldn't accept my password is this why? There was no other option for choosing a identity but as a blogger. Why? I'm the biggest Blazer fan you could find but man this just is right. I guess you don't want people to be interactive?

Oh, I was truly hoping to hook-up with you guys yesterday while you were in town. OK, I'll let it go.....this time. ;) Seriously, though, I know you had far more important things to do, and take care of, than accommodate my Blazer Jones.

Hope to see you sometime this coming season. We're already working on the next Blazer Bash!!

I cringe whenever I hear anything about Zach having a "career year". Zach's main problems are that he's too selfish on offense, refuses to play any semblence of defence and he seems more concerned about stats than winning. I've never doubted he would be OK physically, but he needs a complete mental adjustment about his approach to the team and how he plays.

D. Miles is probably our most talented small forward. Z Bo is a great talent and presence in the post. If both of these players are able to have a team first mentality, on and off the court, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong when calling and hoping for them both to be traded. Prove me wrong guys, I really want to be.

I've always been a fan of Jacks, and am really looking forward to seeing him and Blake have great careers at the point.

Love the blog, thanks again for a great update Mike.

Z-Bo and Jack in the ATL
posted: 7/24/2006 at 7:49 PM

Greetings from Atlanta.

We arrived in the early afternoon in Atlanta, and, as I explained yesterday, are here to get a first-hand look at Zach Randolph and Jarrett Jack. Trail Blazers player development/assistant coach Bill Bayno is down here, as is strength coach Bobby Medina. We just saw Zach for a few minutes today, and are getting set to attend tomorrow's (Tuesday's) workout sessions with the players.

I did talk to Bayno when I arrived today. He arrived a few hours before we did, on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles. He went right from the airport to Georgia Tech and put Zach through an intense workout. They had a chance to workout for a few days together in Las Vegas, when Randolph arrived for the final days of summer league.

I've known Bill for a couple of years now, and he's not the kind of guy to blow smoke. I had to keep reminding myself of this as I listened to him rave about the progress of Zach. This has been the first time Bayno has worked with Z-Bo and the first thing he did is call Zach an "absolute gem of a person." He said Zach is embracing this opportunity and has a hunger that makes him very easy to coach. This was, obviously, great to hear. Bayno is one of the best player development coaches around and he's a huge addition to this staff. He's willing to go wherever the players are, and work with them as long as they can take it. He's intense, and pushes these players to make themselves better. It's so vital to have a guy like this on the coaching staff.

Bayno talked about his goals, concerning Randolph this summer. He told me this afternoon he "wants to be in Zach's head" and wants to "push him" and says Zach is one of his biggest priorities right now. He talked about how good Zach has looked in the post, and even said he hasn't really bothered to spend much time in there with him, at least with the left hand, because he's already got that down. Bayno said they're not spending any time working on Zach's left, but instead are concentrating almost solely on getting better with his weak hand, his right.

I talked to Zach in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago and asked him what kind of shape he was in. He was honest, and said "so so." I told Bayno that today, and he told me that where they are at now is "night and day" compared to where Zach was in Vegas. Randolph worked in Vegas, and now has had two workouts a day in six of the last eight days. The workouts are long and hard and they're pounding away at full-court, game-situation stuff.

As for Jack, I'm happy to tell you he has been cleared for play. Jarrett has been working out, but now trainer Jay Jensen has cleared him for full-court games. Jack says the surgically-repaired ankle is feeling great, and says he's suprised at how quickly he's recovered. He originally told me he thought he'd be cleared some time in late August, so we're ahead of schedule by almost a month. I know it was killing Jarrett not to be able to play in the summer league games in Vegas, but that would have been pushing it.

Both Zach and Jarrett will play pick-up games with some of the NBA players who spend their summers in Atlanta. The best games in the summer are in Houston and Atlanta, and that's always been the case. They'll compete tomorrow night, and Wednesday, and possibly the rest of the week as well. I'll be here until Wednesday, and will have a much more complete update on their progress following the workouts tomorrow.

As I mentioned yesterday, Blazers TV producer Scott Zachry, and photographer Jeff Curtin are with me in Atlanta, and we'll have video for you on the web site as soon as we get home, so you can see for yourself.

I joined Brian Wheeler and Mike Rice last night on Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, our weekly radio show. Wheels did his usual great job of sitting in the hosts chair.

It was a huge night on the show, as the guys were joined by Raef LaFrentz, who talked about being traded to Portland from Boston on draft night. Raef is currently looking for a home in Portland and says he is totally re-locating to the area. He also mentioned that is the toughest part of being traded, as you can imagine. He also mentioned that he is going to wear number 9 for the Blazers, as I reported to you about a month ago. Our radio producer "The Captain" Rich Patterson reminded Raef that Danny Ainge, the guy who just traded LaFrentz from Boston to Portland, also wore number 9 when he was in Portland. LaFrentz laughed, and was very suprised at the irony there. Yes, he's still going to wear 9.

Click here to hear the interview with LaFrentz.

Mike Kahn, from Fox Sports.com was also on the radio show. Kahn has covered the Sonics for years, and gave us his thoughts on the Seattle situation. He's very close to it and had some interesting thoughts. Click here to listen to the interview with Kahn.

Nate McMillan, who is in Las Vegas with Team USA, gave us a sneak peak at what the travelling roster will be for the trip to the World Championships in Japan, when he joined the show. He also talked about how fun it has been to coach guys like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Click here for the Nate McMillan interview.

We'll have much more from the workouts with Zach and Jarrett Tuesday, right here on trailblazers.com.

As always, thanks for the great info. Your blogs provide us with inside info that we cant get anywhere else!

Great to read that Zbo is working hard and has the desire to improve. This is a big season for Zach. He needs to step it up and prove to Trail Blazer nation that he wants to be a part of the future of this team and become a leader. Trail Blazer fans hope he returns to the 20 & 10 guy we all loved a few years ago.

Good news about Zach. I have been more than a little skeptical about him, but I haven't given up hope. With Jarrett and Martell maturing, Blake, Joel, Raef, and Brian each providing a solid and professional veteran presence, the addition of Brandon and LaMarcus, and your reports of his off-season progress, it's getting easier and easier to believe in the possibility of Zach having a monster year.

If you see Tim while you're there, tell him The Wookie says "hello."

And you can delete this part if you like before publishing my comment: It struck me that generally speaking, using the words "red-eye" and "Zach" in the same blog entry, no matter the context, may be ill-advised, lol...

Thanks Mike for the updates. The interview with Raef was good and with Nate even better. Good to hear of Zach's work ethic. Jarrett has his priorities right to get his college degree. I hope LaMarcus is paying attention!

The Blog Heads for Atlanta
posted: 7/23/2006 at 10:50 PM

No, I haven't been traded. Not yet, anyway. But, I did want you to know that Monday morning I'm flying to Atlanta to watch Zach Randolph and Jarrett Jack workout with Blazers assistant coach Bill Bayno, and strength coach Bob Medina. Blazers TV producer Scott Zachry, and associate producer Jeff Curtin are going with me. Those two were the reason we had such great stuff from Las Vegas at summer league.

We'll be shooting video of the workouts and will be interviewing both Zach and Jarrett. We'll try and get stuff back to the web site as soon as we can. I'll be blogging from Atlanta late Monday night, and then again on Tuesday night. We return home on Wednesday, so it's not a long trip, and that's just fine with us. I hadn't even totally unpacked from our Vegas trip and we're off again.

Some of you may know this, but one promise Jarrett made to his mother when he decided to leave Georgia Tech early and make himself eligible for the NBA Draft, was that he would return to get his college degree. He's working on that right now, and he's got some final exams this week. So, we'll be talking to him about his studies and will have an update on that for you as well.

Brian Wheeler will sit in for me Monday night on our radio show, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss. I will be on the show in the 7 o'clock hour live from Atlanta. It should be a great show. Raef LaFrentz will lead off the lineup at 6:15. The guys will then have Mike Kahn, from Fox Sports.com on to talk about, among other things, the situation with the Sonics in Seattle. Nate McMillan, who's in Las Vegas with Team USA, will hopefully join the guys at the top of the 7 o'clock hour to discuss how that's going. A lot of you e-mailed me wanting updates on that, so we're trying to get Nate for the show. He has said he'll make every effort to do it, but their schedule is very busy in the evenings following the workouts during the day. I'll be on at either 7:05 or 7:20, depending on if we get Nate on the show.

I've also been getting questions about Sergio Rodriguez. We talked about Sergio during our Las Vegas trip, as he joined us for one day before flying back to Spain. I can tell you that his contract with Addeco Madrid has been bought out, and that he now has a fully-executed NBA contract. In short, that means he'll be a Trail Blazer next season. That's just become official in the past few days. Addeco Madrid had to clear the check and advise FIBA the release was in place. They have now done that. So, I hope that clears up some of those questions. I talked to Sergio in Vegas and he told me how excited he is to be coming to the NBA, and how much he is looking forward to being a Trail Blazer. I know some of you who have written me are sold on his abilities, and they will be on display next season for the Blazers. That's great news.

So, again, I'll be talking to you from Atlanta for the next couple of days. Zach is apparently looking very, very good, and that's one of the big reasons we're going down to the Dirty South. Bayno, who's known as one of the best player development coaches in the business, has been thrilled with Zach's progress. I'll have a first-hand account for you.

I also want to mention that Saturday I took part in a terrific charity golf event at Langdon Farms Golf Club. Blazer Dan Dickau, and player personnel director Kevin Pritchard were there, along with me, Rice, Wheels, Antonio Harvey, and Bill Schonely. It was the Caddies 4 a Cure event, put on by Ryan DuChene of Nike Golf, and Justin Marquart. There were some big-time celebs there this year, including George Gervin, who I had the pleasure of dining with on Friday night at the Tiger Woods Center at Nike. It was a fabulous dinner, and the emcee was my friend Ian Furness from 1080 The Fan. He did a great job, as always. It's a great charity these guys have put together. I encourage you to check out their web site. Click here for that. This was the third annual event, and it's truly a grass-roots effort by these guys. Just wanted to mention that, and to thank Ryan and Justin for their efforts. You guys are the best and we were all truly blessed to be a part of it.

Okay, again, listen for the radio show tonight at 6 o'clock on KXL-AM 750 in the Portland area, and kxl.com if you're outside the area. If you miss any of the interviews, I'll post them on this blog late Monday night. Talk to you later.

Pritchard had time for golf? I thought he already took his 15 minute break for the summer. I hope he brought his cell phone. You know, when making the incredibly grand premature leap that KP could somehow find himself as the next blazer GM, i often wonder who would replace him as Director of Player Personnel.
Thanks for the update on Sergio. It's good to get that news from a trusted source. Realgm mispelled Aldridge as Albridge three times in the same story they had breaking down our draft night. For some reason, i don't exactly feel compelled to rely on what i hear from there.
Sounds like a great show is lined up for tonight. I think Raef is probably the most underrated change to the roster so far this off season. I'm really interested as to what he'll have to say.
Of course, the show-maker would be to have Nate give us an update on Team USA. So, i'm really hoping you can make that happen. Our coach is one of the biggest studs in professional sports. Anytime you can get him on, it's a definite plus.
As for your trip to Alanta, i'm intrigued. You get paid for this? Wow, i used to think Quick had the best job in the world, but i'd have to say, now, he comes in way behind you. Don't think you're getting any sympathy for your job woe of not being able to fully unpack from a trip to Vegas before heading off to Atlanta. Really now, Mike.

Hey MB,

Enjoy the heat of Atlanta.

Ian maybe your friend, but I'm not sure if he did a "good job as always"...unless his radio show is pure shtick (which I know is common among radio shows. Just do things to get ratings).

Good to hear Zach is doing good, BUT...we've heard this before about other former Blazers who weren't the sharpest tools in the shed. Last year Travis worked out with Kobe (or whatever it was), and didn't show any evidence of that.

I hope Zach is working out, but I'm not going to put the cart before the horse. Zach has to show the improvement during the season before I get excited that he's working out during the summer. That means playing smarter defense, and smarter on offense.

And no offense to Zach, he hasn't really shown the cognitive ability to do that for long stretches of time.

Przybilla On Courtside Monday Night
posted: 7/17/2006 at 10:49 PM

Joel Przybilla wrapped up a very busy day on Monday with a visit to Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss. We were broadcasting live from the G.I. Joe's in Delta Park. A lot of Trail Blazer fans turned out to not only see Joel and hear from him, but also to get autographs.

Przybilla, and his wife, Noelle, were on the air with us during the first hour of the program. As usual, I hosted the show along with my TV partner Mike Rice, and Brian Wheeler was on hand last night to help us out. I told Wheels the show is always better when he's on the microphone with us, and we love having him. Joel and Noelle talked about what went into their decision to return to Portland, and discussed the reasons why, in the end, it wasn't that tough a decision for them.

Also joining us in the first hour of the show last night was Blazers president Steve Patterson, and the CEO and president of G.I. Joe's, Norm Daniels. Click here to hear the first hour of the program.

In the 7 o'clock hour of the show, the director of player personnel for the Trail Blazers, Kevin Pritchard was our guest. He joined us last week in Las Vegas, and we wanted to get him back on tonight to talk about the signing of Przybilla. We couldn't really officially speak about it last week, even though we talked around it as best we could. Pritchard, who's a big reason why Joel returned to Portland (and that comes from Joel himself), joined us for the first two segments of the second hour. Click here to hear Pritchard's interview.

Thanks to all you fans who participated in not only the big signing event downtown today, but also those of you who listened, and made the trip out to Delta Park to see Joel last night. Joel and Noelle were very moved by the whole experience, and stated many times that the fans and the people of the Portland area were a big reason why they decided to return.

Joel and Noelle will be guests on many local radio stations Tuesday morning, and will appear live on KATU's AM Northwest TV program at 9 am.

We were hoping to hear from coach Nate McMillan last night, but he's back in Las Vegas getting set for training camp for Team USA. As many of you know, Nate is an assistant coach for the United States men's senior team. Jim Boeheim and Mike D'Antoni are the other assistants, and the head coach is Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. Nate told me this morning he is "very honored to be taking part in the coaching of the U.S. national team." It's already been a very busy summer for Nate, and things just get more hectic with these responsibilities.

Team USA will be training in Las Vegas through July 25th, and then will cut its roster down from 24 players to 14 players. Following the camp, the team will head for China to play a couple of exhibition games, and then will play a couple of more games in Korea. This is all in preparation for play in the World Championships, August 19-24 in Japan.

Thanks for making Monday a great day for the Trail Blazers and their fans.

Hey, Mike, next time you bring up Nate and his involvement as an assistant coach for the first ever USA Basketball Senior National Team, could you give us your personal view as to how well you think Team USA will do? As a huge basketball fan and patriot of this country, i've been very disappointed in the results the USA has had in international play, recently. Do you believe it will be fairly easy for the United States to reclaim its dominance in the sport with the development of the new national team?
It's extremely hard to believe that Team USA will have much trouble given some of the line-ups that are possible with its current roster. Especially since the players will have a chance to generate some chemistry over the course of a few years. I'm extremely interested to see how it will play out.
I know this is a blazer site, but we do have the connection with Nate. I'm extremely proud that the head coach of my beloved blazers is willing to give up a large chunk of what little time he has of his own to be part of the team that represents this country in international play. It's all very exciting.

Hey Mike, Great show! I wish i could have been there. You and Rice have great chemistry together. Good job with Prizz. It's great to have him back. I always look forward to your blog and i am extremely grateful that you take the time to answer some of our comments (especially the one of mine). I was wondering if you could give any insight regarding Paul Allen and the team being for sale. It seems to be an unanswered question and any information would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!

Hey Mike,

Tell Rice if he's going to say, "Stay tuned, I've got trade rumors", he better have trade rumors.
Seriously, it's a lame way to keep people listening.

I'll try and answer a few of your questions.

Mike,

I'm not sure about Pritchard and the GM position. He had a heck of a draft day, and as I've talked about, was huge in getting Joel re-signed. I'll let you know when I hear anything.

MrBlazer,

I'm hoping to get Nate on Courtside next week, as I have some similar questions about Team USA. I think everyone has been disappointed with the national team's showings as of late. And, you're right about Nate giving up a lot of free time to help out with Team USA, and it's not just this summer, but is a three-year committment, right through the Olympics in China.

Chris in Hawaii,

I haven't heard any new news on the Paul Allen situation. He was so instrumental on draft day, and was very excited. Let's hope that's a good sign. Not many NBA owners could have pulled off what he did in the draft.

Wookie,

I'll work on getting a link up here to Antonio's infamous call. Thanks, as always, for the compliments.

Ribbon,

I'll beat on Rice for his "tease" during the show. The guy lives for trade rumors, and next week I'll make him come through with some and not just talk about it. I think he actually had some last night, but he's getting up there in years and probably just forgot them. I'm going to suggest some medication for him.

WOW!! Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. I hope Paul Allen stays as the Blazers owner. I think he is doing a good job. His willingness and commitment to making the team better is very rare. maybe you can make him one of those DVD's that worked for Joel. Your a super nice guy. Talk to you again soon.

Great to have Joel staying for the long haul. Now, to finish off this perfect off-season, we need to ship Miles. Everyday I scan the headlines waiting for "Miles has been traded to ?? for??" this is our last move...he does not want to be here so we should move him as soon as we can. Any talks in the works about this..cmon Mike I know you have heard something..let us hear it. By the way great job doin the vegas recaps and the blogs have been great as well.

Hey, Mike, i don't expect you to post this, but i did want to say thank you for your blog. It is the best in the NBA. This team site is way out in front of any other NBA franchise, and your contribution to it is one of the biggest reasons. I'm glad to be a part of it in its infancy because it won't be long and you'll have way to many of these posts to deal with. Thanks again.
BTW, papers in this state, like the Oregonian, are the only papers in the nation that list KP as the "director of player personnel". According to the rest of the country, he already has the GM position.

How much of Joel's Defensive presence and shot blocking ability do we owe to Theo? Also, it seemed every time Przybilla blocked a shot it wound up going back to the offense for a High percentage field goal. How will they fix that this year? Is it really just a matter of boxing out?

Mike, is Sergio signed or what? I know he isn't Joel Przybilla, and he was a late first round pick, but could we get an update? Seems almost disrespectful that realgm and Marentette's blog are the ones informing the public about his status as a blazer. To get beat to the punch by those guys is embarassing. If Allen is excited about him enough to buy out his contract and sign him here, then the rest of the organization should get on the same page and show the guy some love.
I've heard virtually nothing from anyone employed by the blazers about him (save a little from you and KP). Is there a negative consensus toward him as a player or person, or is everyone just uninformed? If the latter is the case, i suggest people get up to date. This guy is going to be part of this team, and my guess is he'll be an instant fan favorite if he plays in the preseason.
He has one of the most wicked behind the back cross-overs i have ever seen. What i like about him most from watching his highlights is that almost every fancy move or pass he does has a purpose. When you watch old highlights of Jason Williams, many times the play could have been done just as effectively without making a high risk move. I don't think that is the case with Sergio. One highlight i saw had him doing a perfectly timed around the back pass to a teammate for a bucket. I watched it several times, and the only way the pass could get to where it needed to be was to do what he did. Truly one of the finest passes i've had the pleasure of viewing.

i have heard rumors about zach being traded, i have one in mind that could probably help both teams and could take place after aug 28th. z bo, raef lafrentz and maybe throw in travis outlaw to philly for chris webber and kyle korver. it would make philly a little younger and possible get them in the playoffs and would give us a young "nate guy" to push darius in korver with a shooting touch, defense and hustle. then webber has a shorter contract and plays similar to z-bo but better passer. he could be a stop gap for aldridge. it would help break up that webber iverson fued. what do you think.

Przybilla Comes Home
posted: 7/16/2006 at 10:46 PM

This great day for the Trail Blazers' organization started this morning along the Willamette River, and continues tonight, a stones throw from the Columbia River.

I mentioned this in my last blog on Friday, but I just wanted to start things off by saying this again. Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, will still be broadcast tonight on KXL 750-AM in the Portland area, and on kxl.com, but we'll be on location at the G.I. Joe's at Delta Park, and not the Lake Grove location. I metioned last week on the radio show, numerous times, that we'd be in Lake Grove. I know a lot of Trail Blazer fans plan on attending the event, so just be advised again about the change.

Joel Przybilla will be on hand for the radio show, and everyone is welcome to attend. It was a big morning on Monday, as we held the signing event for Joel on the Eastbank Esplanade. On hand for the event was Steve Patterson, Kevin Pritchard, Nate McMillan, and of course, Joel and his wife Noelle will be there. Portland City Commissioner Eric Sten was also there, and he had me read a letter to Joel from Portland Mayor Tom Potter.

Before the event, at about 9:30 am, Joel signed his actual contract in Patterson's office. Przybilla's agent, Bill Duffy, was on hand for the signing, and also came to the event on the river.

This day means so much to the Blazers organization. Not only are they getting their starting center back, but they've landed an unrestricted free agent who was heavily courted by other NBA teams. You know this by now, but Przybilla had the opportunity to play for both Detroit and San Antonio, for just about the same money, but instead decided to return to Portland. I think this is just as big, if not bigger, than all the moves made on draft day.

Drafting great players means so much, but this was a case when a player chose on his own to return to the team, when he had many other attractive options. Joel has already said, a big reason why he decided to come back is he truly believes in what is happening in Portland. He sees the enthusiasm, support, and believes in the leadership of this franchise. That, in short, is why it's being celebrated so much by the team. It is such a big emotional lift for everyone around the franchise. Steve Patterson and Kevin Pritchard deserve a lot of credit for selling the vision to Joel.

I hope to see you tonight at G.I. Joe's at Delta Park for the radio show. If you can't catch the show, or the event in the morning, check back here tomorrow for a recap. And, I'll have the interview with Joel for you to download and hear. As always, if you're outside the Portland area, you can hear the show by clicking on kxl.com's listen live link. Talk to you tonight on the radio.

You said the Kevin and Steve Patterson should be commended for "selling Joel the vision"

Usually Mike you are right on, but they didn't sell squat. Joel knows nothing but loyalty, and on top of that he's getting more money and more playing time here than anywhere else. Joel would have stayed if he were the only guy in town, and I commend him for that--not Kevin and Steve.

On a more positive note, thanks for the updates on summer league--sounds like Roy is going to be a STUD muffin. He is getting crazy numbers in hardly any minutes, so I am looking forward to a GREAT career from him. If the Blazers have half an ounce of sense, we better keep him for at least 10 years, not get rid of him like we did Jermaine...

Prez,

Thanks for the comments. Good or bad, I appreciate them. I'm hearing you say that you don't think it made a real difference to Joel who was running things, and what the future plans are in Portland. I disagree with you here. I was actually at that dinner table a few weeks ago when Kevin Pritchard laid out his plan and his "vision" to Joel. I then drove Joel back to his hotel, and we talked all the way there about the direction of the franchise. That dinner, and KP's message, were huge factors in Joel's decision. There wasn't much difference in money between Detroit and Portland, and the San Antonio offer was very attractive as well. And, playing time? Joel would have been the starting center for the Spurs or Pistons next season. You're correct that Joel is very loyal, but winning is also very important to him. I saw him grind through last season on a daily basis, and it wasn't easy for him. It was only his belief in the direction of the team, and trust in those in charge, that led him to re-sign.

2:39 PM
mrblazer said...

Mike, now that you have let the cat out of the bag and told us all that you know KP's vision of our beloved franchise's future, could you let us know, too, this vision, and do your best to "sell" us on it, as well? I know, you can't. But, i'll definitely be one fan that tries to read between the lines of your blog from now on.
I definitely agree with you, Mike. The front office deserves a ton of credit for Przybilla's decision to resign. First, we gave him a chance when nobody else would. We then gave him the playing time he needed to grow as a player (he had a long way to go when he got here). Finally, he let it be known that changes and a new direction for the franchise would need to be seen before he would resign with us. He was certainly obliged, again, on draft day by the front office. What more can an organization do for a player?
Personally, i would have been shocked if Joel would have played somewhere else for the same money. I really don't think he did anything extra special other than just doing the right thing (which isn't as common by NBA players as you'd hope). I believe our organization earned its chance given by Joel. If there is one area we have been good these last couple seasons, it is the area involving Joel Przybilla. I'm happy that he has chosen to be a stand up guy.

Przybilla Celebration Set
posted: 7/13/2006 at 9:41 PM

"Joel Przybilla Day?" I don't know, it's worth a shot I guess. Key to the city? Probably not. I know that stuff has to pass the city government, and that's asking a little too much perhaps. But, Monday will be a big day for the Trail Blazers, that much is for sure. Joel, humble as he is, won't want this big a deal made out of his re-signing with the Blazers, but he's going to get it anyway. I talked to him today on the phone and I can tell you he doesn't have any idea what's planned for him on Monday. His only question for me today was, "what should I wear?" I told him to wear whatever the heck he wants to, just make sure and let Noelle pick it out. I know he hates wearing ties so we can probably rule that out.

Joel and the Trail Blazers will officially announce his new contract with the team on Monday, at 10:45 am, down on the Eastbank Esplanade, at the Salmon Street entrance. Let's just hope the weather holds, and it should. It doesn't rain in July, does it? Joel will, of course, be there, along with Blazers president Steve Patterson, player personnel director Kevin Pritchard, coach Nate McMillan, and others. Patterson and Pritchard need to be publically complimented for all they've done in the past couple of weeks. Draft day was enormous, and not many people gave them much of a shot to get Joel to return. This stuff is all about people, teamwork, and relationships, and we've got great people in this organization. That's how all of this has happened.

I will tell you this much about our conversation today, Przybilla sounds more relaxed and happier than I've heard him in a long time. He wasn't comfortable with this whole free-agent process, and told me many times, "I just want to get this over with." Well, Monday is the final step. Przybilla has spent the past week kicking back at his lake house in Wisconsin, and talked about how happy he is to have this behind him. He and Noelle have already begun looking for houses in the area. They were renting last season. Now, they're ready to buy.

Joel also asked a lot of questions about summer league in Las Vegas, and wanted to know every detail about the new guys. He had already heard, as most of the nation has, about Brandon Roy. He was more interested in LaMarcus Aldridge, and what kind of partner he'll make on this suddenly-imposing Trail Blazers' front line. I filled him in the best I could.

Monday night we'll also have our radio show, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, live from the G.I. Joe's at Delta Park. I told many of you on the air last week we were having the show at the Lake Grove G.I. Joe's, but that's been moved to Delta Park now. It'll air at it's normal time, 6pm to 8, on KXL-750 AM in the Portland area. I told you last week we'd have a special guest on hand, and I guess you've figured out by now that'll be Przybilla.

The Blazers Broadcasting team returned home from Las Vegas last night. We got in at about midnight, and some season ticket holders were on our flight. They were fired up about what they had just seen, and we even got stopped in the airport by several fans who wanted to get the inside scoop on what this recent buzz is all about. We were only too happy to share.

It's great to be home, and thanks for all your e-mails and comments about the coverage in Las Vegas. We had a ball, and it'll continue on Monday.

I am elated that we got Joel back it will do numbers for our defense this year, especially after losing Victor and Theo. I think Aldridge and Joel together will make a deadly combo. I am probably more happy just knowing that Steven Smith of ESPN is WRONG. He said on draft night that there is now way Joel will come back to Portland. I guess he underestimated a little thing called loyalty. Here's to a wonderful and exciting season.

Is Martell going to be able to play the 3? I know it has been mentioned a couple of times, but no one has really discussed it in detail. Nate McMillan said that Roy won't be playing much point during the season, and it appears he may be ready to take some of the 2 guard minutes from Martell and Dixon. I know Martell has the heigth to play the 3 but is he comfortable in that position, did he play it at all last year, and if so how did he do? I love the Blazers draft choices this year and can't waith to come to some games this fall!!!

Lee,

I'll absolutely post some pictures of the event on Monday. Family is very important to Joel, and where they live is important. That's a big reason why he chose to remain in Portland.

L.T.G.,

I wish I had more information on trades for you. There were just six of them on draft day, remember. If you're someone who wants a Miles trade to happen, I wouldn't get your hopes up, at least for now. There always seems to be a little quiet period following the draft and summer league, that's what we're in right now.

Crude,

We're always up for talking trade rumors, and that seems like about all we do on the Courtside Monday Night radio show. I love the forums and check them out all the time. You're certainly right about them being opinionated, and passionate. The personal attacks are a little much, but I enjoy the banter. And, you're correct about the credibility being all over the place. But, that's fine because it's just conversation. Some trade rumors, like last week's that had Darius going to Minnesota, we heard about in Las Vegas, I knew wasn't true and therefore didn't have a lot to say about it. I was sitting with Kevin Pritchard, having lunch, when I got a call asking me about the supposed trade. Kevin laughed, and then I had a pretty good idea nothing was cooking. I may not always have a source like Kevin sitting with me when these rumors come up, but I'll certainly always be able to do a little investigating. If it's a worthy rumor, I'll try and have something on it. But, sometimes things are kept secret for good reasons, and news leaking out about a particular trade can often times kill it. That's why teams are careful at times.
Long answer, but there you go.

When a team is doing badly in the regular season, sometimes we look forward to the off-season. This off-season has been very exciting. The draft night achievments and resigning Joel were highlights, as well as the play of our young guys in Vegas. Now likely after one more trade we will be getting into the real off-season, where there won't be much to report. Time to pull out my old VHS tapes of Clyde The Glide I guess. Leaving Las Vegas
posted: 7/12/2006 at 5:42 PM

Phoenix 91 Portland 82

The Trail Blazers finished play in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League today, falling to the Phoenix Suns 91-82. Portland ended the league with a record of 3 and 2, and tonight most of the players head for the airport to fly home (not necessarily Portland, of course).

While it may have been a loss on the scoreboard, it was hard to feel too badly after watching rookie Brandon Roy finish the league with his biggest game yet. Roy, who has wowed national writers and broadcasters with his play in Las Vegas, scored 35 points today, including 15 in the third quarter when the Trail Blazers got themselves back into the game. At one point in that third, Roy scored 11 straight points, including hitting back-to-back three pointers and helped the Blazers cut Phoenix's lead, which had been as big as 18, to just 5 heading into the fourth quarter. He ended the game 13 of 22 from the field, and was 3 for 3 from behind the three-point line.

I've tried to give you a taste of what other people have been saying about Roy down here in Las Vegas, as he has been the most outstanding player here, without a doubt. Today simply added to his terrific week. But, as I've been reminding you, this is just summer league, and we don't need to remind Roy of that. As he told us on the radio show on Tuesday night, "summer league can be fool's gold. I know it won't like this when the regular season begins." In other words, don't worry about Brandon getting a big head because he was able to dominate this league.

The most impressive thing about Roy today was the fact that when his team was struggling early at the offensive end he simply decided to take over the game. The coaches had been asking him to start looking for his own shot a little more, and he certainly did that. Keep in mind, once again, Roy was playing the point-guard position this week. That's not a position he played in college, and probably won't spend much time there when the NBA's regular season rolls around. Roy ended play in Las Vegas averaging nearly 20 points per game, and shooting a whopping 65% from the field. Not bad for a point guard... who really isn't a point guard.

One last thing on Roy, and then I'll move on. We've been talking about him all week, obviously, and really the only question remaining about his game was his long-range shooting ability, because we just hadn't seen it. Going 3 for 3 today, and 4 for 6 during the league helps answer that question. He's got a very pretty stroke, and it so effortless, just like everything else he does. Okay, just one more thing. I liked this line from Rick Kamla who said, "Roy has a vibe, a poise, and an aura, that screams star."

Speaking of first-round picks, LaMarcus Aldridge had his best game of the summer league today as well. It's really a guard-dominated league, and the big guys don't get many touches. Today, however, the Blazer coaches wanted the ball in Aldridge's hands a little more. He ended the game with 19 points (on 8 of 12 shooting), had 9 rebounds(5 offensive), and 4 blocked shots (we had him with 6).

I spoke with LaMarcus before the game and asked him if he minds not getting all of the attention, with what Roy is doing. He told me, "not at all. I love that I can fly below the radar a little bit, and I love what Brandon has done. He and I will go through the fire together this year."

Travis Outlaw had a nice game as well today, and continuing on this theme, it was probably the best game of the summer league for him. Travis struggled in the first couple of games, and really tried to force his offense. Today he was just out there hustling his tail off and letting his athletic abilty take over. He ended with 16 points and 7 rebounds, and had another highlight dunk finishing a fast break.

Zach Randolph was in attendance today, and really seemed to enjoy being around all of the guys. He met the new additions, and caught up with the returning Blazers, and gave trainer Jay Jensen and strength coach Bob Medina and update on his knee, and workout schedule. He told me his knee is feeling great, and that he can't wait for things to get started in Portland. I also asked him about Joel Przybilla returning to Portland and his eyes lit up. He said, "it was great that Joel chose to return to Portland, when he had the opportunity to sign with either Detroit or San Antonio. He really believes, like we all do, that we've got something great going here. He wanted to be a part of it."

By the way, Zach did the third quarter in the radio analyst's chair next to Wheels and Antonio today. He came out of his seat when Travis hammered down his dunk in the third. I reminded Zach that he's not supposed to be a cheerleader on press row. He said, "you guys always do that." Touche'.

I'm actually writing this blog at the gate at the airport in Las Vegas. We've got a while before our flight departs for Portland. This is probably the first time I haven't been sitting in a cloud of smoke since we've been here.

This town is a smoker's paradise. We even made a run by a local grocery store- not a convenience store, but a national chain grocery store. People were puffing away, and yes, there was a line of little old ladies playing slot machines near the front of the store, all blazing away. Our checker, who was obviously working a "day job" had a pack of smokes sitting on the counter and even dropped the f-bomb, twice, while ringing us up. The lady behind us considered, out loud, calling the manager, and then we realized that checker was the manager. That was a first. I know, what happens here is supposed to stay here, but that's just too good not to mention. I was with TV producer Scott Zachry and photographer Jeff Curtin, and we're still talking about that one. We got to the car in the parking lot and were like, "did that just happen?"

Other "highlights" from the week in Las Vegas:

-After we went to watch the Little River Band in concert (if you're from the 80's you'll appreciate that) we were invited to the hospitality room to meet the band. Wheels knows the tour manager and that's how we pulled that off. Comped tickets, of course. It turned out that we were the only ones in the room, and sat with the band for a couple of hours. That was pretty cool. Rice loved all the free stuff, and I'm suprised he didn't take out some Tupperware.

-While in the hotel lobby ordering coffee to go, assistant coach Maurice Lucas discovered he didn't have any money (Rice can relate). Zachry had to buy his coffee for him, and commented "I'll never see that 3 bucks again."

-The massive fountain in front of the Bellagio has to be one of the top free attractions in the world. It's incredible. I don't really gamble, so that was my entertainment.

-The big winners in Vegas- plastic surgeons and tattoo artists.

-I already know what LaMarcus Aldridge snacks on late at night- Teddy Grahams and Cheez-its. I had to made a run for him late on Friday night.

-The In-n-Out Burger just off the strip. Holy cow. When are we getting these in P-town? Curtin says he saw the most beautiful woman in the world, eating a Double-Double, in the joint. He asked Z and I if we agreed, we said "no, our wives are the most beautiful women in the world (that one is for you, dear)."

-Oh, that Brian Wheeler. What a giver. The local economy is in better shape than it was a week ago.

-Antonio Harvey set up shop by the pool at the hotel. Good scenery I suppose. His comment to that, "come on man, I was working on my tan."

-At the actual summer league it was a reunion of sorts for former Trail Blazers. On one afternoon I saw, Buck Williams, Terry Porter, Danny Ainge, Jerome Kersey, Wayne Cooper, Geoff Petrie, Mario Elie, and T.R. Dunn. And, of course, from more recent times, Sebastian Telfair who I talked to today.

-Lastly, and most importantly, this summer league provided a buzz and feeling about the Portland Trail Blazers that I haven't felt in years.

Be good.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the great reports from Vegas. Sounds like everyone had a good time. Can't wait for the preseason so I can see Roy in action. As a former Huskey, I had hoped Roy would do well down there, but he has exceeded my expectations. Hopefully Nate can figure out a way to keep Roy and Martell on the floor at the same time.

Mike great article, but where's the box score? I need to know what Martell did against Phoenix, please. Boy Roy and LaMarcus are certainly showing why they had all the hype!! I think this might go down as 1 of the best drafts for the Blazers in quite sometime. Keep up the good work.

Mike,
I enjoy your blog and your work on the air. I have to take "lisght" exception to your criticsm of Vegas and it's smokers. Yes, smoking is allowed in all casinos. There have been efforts to outlaw it, but the operators are paranoid that that might mean they'll lose customers.

As for grocerie stores, smoking is not allowed in shopping areas as you implied. There usually is smoking allowed in the gambling areas, which are almost always slightly more private areas (and also areas children are not allowed.)

What I'm trying to say, probably not very well, is that there are a lot of good people who call Las Vegas home. I'm one of them. I mean, I call this my home, good is a relative term. The broad strokes you seem to be using to paint us all are grossly unfair.

I don't know which store you were in, but there are a multitude of great places to shop and buy groceries in Las Vegas, and if I knew the one you had your experience with, I would cease to buy there.

Ken,

Thanks for your response. We had a terrific time in Las Vegas, as I said all week, and it's an incredibly unique place. Our stories are reflection of that. The grocery store incident was actually very amusing, and it's one of our favorite memories, as strange as that sounds. There's just so much that happens there that's out of the ordinary, and I actually think it's kind of refreshing. Anything goes, and that's obviously been a big part of their tourism advertising campaign. The smoking thing is just so different from what we're used to in the Northwest, where people aren't allowed to smoke anywhere. I don't smoke, and it actually doesn't really bother me to be around others who do. It's just so unusual to see, when you compare it to what we see up here in the NW. I'm kind of more "live and let live" so to see relaxed rules, on everything, I don't think is necessarily an evil thing. As I said earlier in the week, for people watching, there's no place like Vegas. That was one of my favorite parts of the trip. And, we were always treated very, very well by everyone in Vegas. We travelled with the team to the Salt Lake City summer league for the first couple of years, and for the last two have been in Vegas. What a contrast.

Start making your signs Blazer Fans, "Roy 4 RoY". The performance he had to end the summer league will silence all the critics for a long time. We finally have a draft pick who has the ability change the direction that this team had been heading in. Nate is going to finally be able to pprove that he is the great coach Portland hired last year.

Courtside Live From ESPNZone
posted: 7/11/2006 at 9:47 PM

It may have been a day off for the Trail Blazers in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League on Tuesday night, but we put a few of the players to work on the radio. Because of the game last night, we hosted our radio show, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, tonight from the ESPNZone inside our hotel, New York New York, on the Las Vegas Strip.

I was amazed at how many Trail Blazers' fans showed up to join us for the show, and they all wanted to see our guests, much to Mike Rice's dismay. He kind of figured he was the main attraction.

Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey joined us on the air as well, and for the first 30 minutes we talked about our individual impressions of how the summer league has gone for Portland. Everytime we start talking about the week we end up talking about Brandon Roy. I posted a link to this article earlier, but if you missed it, here is NBA TV's Rick Kamla's article from today on NBA.com. Click here to read who he thinks has been the star of the show down here. I'll give you one line from Kamla's article. He says, "Both Roy and Foye will be terrific pros, but Roy is a cut above. Simple as that."

Roy walked into the back room, where we were hosting the show, with Jarrett Jack. My first thought was how nice it was to see these two players already hanging out together. Jarrett, who hasn't played in the summer league due to the recent surgery on his ankle, has been here the entire time, and has been a very big help to his new teammates. He's also had a chance to workout with the team and continue the rehab on his ankle, which is feeling very good he says. You'll hear Jarrett discuss this in the interview, but he told us when the doctors went into perform the surgery they found that 85 percent of the tissue in his ankle was unhealthy, and they were amazed he played as much as he did last season. I don't think we've yet seen a healthy Jack on the floor, and the doctors are convinced the surgery was very effective in removing the bad tissue. Jarrett says he's planning on going full speed as early as August.

Click here to hear the interview with Jarrett and Brandon on the show tonight.

After Jarrett and Brandon stepped aside, we welcomed in LaMarcus Aldridge. He joined us late in the 6 o'clock hour of the show. I mentioned before this week how likable all these guys are, and one of my favorites, already, is Aldridge. He mentioned earlier this week that he was hungry and I told him I was going down to the convenience store to grab some water for my room. While I was there, I grabbed some snacks for him and took them to his room. He was so appreciative, and even joked that the trainers had better not hear about this because I didn't get him the healthiest things in the store. It was just one of those moments that let me know how grounded this kid is, and why everyone in his past says such terrific things about him. Aldridge told us, during the show tonight, he talks to his high school coach (who also coached Toronto's Chris Bosh) about five times a day. It doesn't suprise me that LaMarcus has a lot of friends.

Click here to hear the interview with Aldridge.

After LaMarcus left we grabbed the player personnel director for the Trail Blazers, Kevin Pritchard. If you read this blog often, you know how big a Pritchard fan I am, and there are many reasons why. If you haven't heard Kevin talk about his philsophy, you have to listen to this interview. He not only gave us a motivational speech, but recapped that wild draft day. He explained how, and why, the Trail Blazers made the moves they did on draft night. He also shot down a rumor that evidently was flying around Portland today concerning Darius Miles. Kevin is not a big one for blowing smoke, so believe him when he says something.

Pritchard also wanted to talk about the Joel Przybilla situation, but as of that time, couldn't. As of 9 o'clock Pacific Time tonight, he could have. We all know what the great news is, and very, very soon, it'll be made official.

To listen to our interview with Kevin, click here.

I want to thank everyone who made this show tonight such a great one. KXL's Jay Allen, who's been with us all week down here, hustled to make this happen in a portable studio at the ESPNZone. Jeff Curtin, who handles a TV camera the way Santana handles his guitar, was a great help as always, and TV producer Scott Zachry made sure everything ran smoothly. I also want to thank my TV and radio partner Mike Rice, and Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey. I also can't forget "The Captain" Rich Patterson, who runs the radio network from our studios at KXL in Portland. We're all so tight and have such a great time together. I think that comes through to all of you.

The Trail Blazers wrap up play in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League tomorrow, with a 1 o'clock game against the Phoenix Suns. You can hear that game, tape-delayed, on KXL at 9 o'clock tomorrow night. Then, we're heading for the airport and fly home to Portland. It'll be nice to get out of this heat. But, it's been a fanstastic trip. I hope you've enjoyed the reports, highlights, interviews, and tonight's radio show. Thanks for staying with me all week. It's been a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I can't wait for the regular season to begin.

What a great start to this off-season. I think the important part will be once the summer league is over today and once everyone has some "time off" that they just stay in portland and WORK WORK WORK to keep on improving, especially all of our young guys. i think the font office is working to do its part, but now the tough part begins with the players using their talent that we all know they have! i'm excited for it! Thanks for the awesome interviews also!

Three in a Row for Blazers in Vegas
posted: 7/10/2006 at 11:52 PM

A quick update to last night's blog for you. I'll be posting a new one tonight, following our radio show, but wanted you to get an idea of what people are saying down here who are watching these games. As you know, NBA TV is taping some of these games, and have many of their people down here. Rick Kamla is here, and this is what he wrote today. Click here to read it, and I'll be talking to you later on the radio, and then later tonight right here.

Portland 72 Washington 68

The Trail Blazers played their best first half of the Toshiba Vegas Summer League on Monday night against the Washington Wizards and built a 17-point lead before halftime. They followed that up with perhaps their worst second half of the summer league. But, fortunately for them, they were still able to hang on to win their third-straight game, beating the Wizards 72-68.

Portland put 30 points on the board in the first quarter, and led the Wizards 46-34 at halftime. But, late in the fourth quarter, Washington battled back to tie the game at 68, before Brandon Roy hit two clutch free throws. Kevin Pinkney sealed the win with a tip in with 30 seconds left. The Trail Blazers now stand 3 and 1 in the Vegas Summer League, and finish their play on Wednesday against the Phoenix Suns at 1 o'clock.

Roy finished the game with 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting, and continued his outstanding play at the point guard position. Martell Webster, who scored 15 points in the first quarter, led the team with 19 points on 3 of 6 shooting from long range. LaMarcus Aldridge had his best offensive game of the summer league with 12 points, and also pulled down 8 rebounds in 33 minutes.

It was the best game so far for Travis Outlaw, who scored 13 points and recorded 6 rebounds for Portland. Travis, who struggled in the Blazers' first game, has rebounded nicely, and Monday night was efficient in his 32 minutes.

The Trail Blazers shot 51 percent for the game, after shooting 67 percent in the first half. Unlike their previous three games, the Blazers grabbed an early lead and didn't have to battle from behind. Washington never led, and the only tie of the game came at 68 with a minute to play.

Assistant coach Monty Williams handled the head coaching duties for the Blazers, after Dean Demopolous coached them in the first three games. Williams will also serve as the head coach in the final game on Wednesday.

Tuesday will be a day off for the Trail Blazers, before wrapping things up against the Suns. Unlike Saturday, when they had a day off from games, but went through several scrimmages and a short practice, Tuesday will be a true day off.

It will not be a day off for the broadcasters, however. I know, that's shocking to many of you. We will host our radio show, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, from the ESPNZone, inside New York New York Hotel and Casino. It'll be at the normal time, from 6pm to 8 on KXL-750 am in the Portland area. If you're outside the Portland area, you can hear the show on kxl.com. Our guests will include Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, player personnel director Kevin Pritchard, and possibly a couple of other players. I'll know more about it tomorrow when I get a chance to talk to a few of the guys.

I wanted to get to a few of the questions you fans have been asking. The one I've heard the most is about Roy, and whether or not we'll see him playing the point guard spot during the regular season. He has done such a great job of playing this new position (new to him, anyway) in this summer league. I talked to Nate McMillan about it and he told me he would be suprised if Roy spent much time at the point during the regular season. I'd be suprised if he didn't spend at least some time there, especially seeing how he's run the team during these past four games. As you probably know, the Blazers have several other point guards who will handle the bulk of the minutes. Steve Blake, Jarrett Jack, and Dan Dickau are more than capable, and will allow Brandon to return to his normal position at the shooting guard spot. All I know is Roy has more than shown good things happen when the ball is in his hands, and don't think that's been lost on the Portland coaches.

The other question I've been getting a lot concerns Hector Romero, who was invited to play with the Blazers during the summer league. Hector is from Venezuela, and has been a very nice suprise during these games. He has shown a toughness the coaches love, and has even been solid at the offensive end. His three-point shot isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but he's shown the ability to hit it, and has had several spectacular dunks. Tonight, following the game, we (the broadcasters) had dinner with the coaching staff in a restaurant at Mandalay Bay, which is an incredible place, by the way. After dinner we ran into Romero, who was walking around the hotel with his girlfriend, and a hand-held video camera recording some memories of Vegas. Hector is leaving tomorrow to return home to play for his national team in Venezuela. We congratulated him on a great summer league and wished him luck. It's possible he could get an invite to training camp in the fall, but with so many players already guaranteed contracts, he's probably a long shot, at best, to make the Blazers roster for the regular season.

Dinner with the coaches was great, and I want to thank Kevin Pritchard for always including us in things like that. I don't really know how things work with other teams, but we're allowed access, are so close to this staff, and have built great relationships with the coaches. I can't imagine that it's this way with many other NBA teams. We're very fortunate. We get priviledged information, and some of it we're allowed to pass on to you. This has been a special time for all of us. I was talking about my blog with Demopolous tonight, and all the great responses I've received from you fans. Dean had a puzzled look on his face at one point and finally asked me, "what the heck is a blog?" I tried to explain it, but clearly he doesn't spend a lot of time surfing the net.

Tomorrow night's radio show should be great, and I hope you can join us. If you can't, we'll have all of the interviews on trailblazers.com for you to listen to later. I'll post them tomorrow night, following the show. This time in Vegas has gone by quickly, and it's been great to have you all along for the ride. It's hard to believe we've got just one game left.

Thanks for all your hard work. I will be listening to the show live on KXL.com. It's going to be about 3:00pm here in Hawaii. I can't wait to hear the question about Roy playing the point. All i have heard are good things about his passing, ability to find the open man and his overall decision making. I don't see why he wouldn't get a significant amount of minutes there especially if he gives us the best chance of winning. I know we already have jack, Blake and Dickau. From what you have seen in summer league do you think Roy is good enough to beat them out for the starting or backup point position if given the opportunity? THANKS!!

Thanks for your comments Chris. I encourage you to listen to the interviews with both Brandon and coach McMillan, as both have addressed the point-guard questions. Click on Summer League Central, and then select the different game highlights and interviews we have posted. I'm curious to see what will happen come the regular season, and it was nice to hear Brandon has a healthy perspective realizing this is just summer league, and things obviously will get a little tougher come November when the season begins. That being said, everything has gone possibly better than expected here in Vegas with the young guys.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the great reports. This has got to be one the best covered summer leagues that I can remember for the Blazers.
It's clear Martell can shoot the lights out, which is excellent..but tell him to work on his attacking the basket! He's an athletic, hard working kid, and if he can become as good of a slasher as he is a shooter..he's going to be unstoppable.

Hey Mike, keep up the good work on covering the up and coming Blazers. I'm curious as to why Brandon Roy doesn't shoot more often. It seems like he can do so much more with his offensive skills for the team. Maybe that's a credit to his incredible unselfishness, but shooting 66% when the most number of shots he's attempted per game is 9? That's a bit odd. I would love to see him be more aggressive!
Thanks!

12:53 PM
Mike Barrett said...

That's a good point Protein, and I've been waiting for him to look a little bit more for his own shot as well. I think the obvious reason he hasn't been, is he's been playing point guard, and is trying to get his teammates involved. He's shown us he can get to the hoop just about anytime he wants, and also gets to the free throw line. He reminds me a bit of Rod Strickland when he gets into the paint, in that he really never seems to get his shot blocked. Rod was always so good at that, and I think is one of the best point guards ever at finishing at the rim. And, yes, you're right, things will get tougher when the regular season arrives. Brandon has told me that several times this week. He knows this is just summer league.

Mike, ditto on the reporting and kudo's to the orginization for setting up the delayed broadcasts and overall fan access to the summer league. I think Roy has been exactly the kind of aggressive player he should be at point guard. Aggresive for his own shot as needed and aggresive to get his teammate's good shots and to keep them into the flow of the game. The comments i've read are alot of "good descision making, every dribble has a purpose, not alot of wasted movements" are the ones that have me excited about our new blazer. His high shooting percentage is further evidence of not only his physical abilities but his descision making abilities as well. Just look how much better the whole team does as soon as he steps on the floor. From what i got out of nate's comments was he wants his scoring gaurd to be able to bring the same types of abilities his point does (last season he did put two points in at the same time alot) I can't wait to see him next season when he will be at the scoring gaurd position. whith the abilities he has shown to create and finish his own shot and his unselfish and smart play i see alot of open shots in webster's future!

The consensus around the watercooler is one of optimism. We really feel they are assembling a talented young group. Roy just keeps us licking our chops and Aldridge is showing us why we got him-defense.

Defensively we should be much improved in my eyes, with the addition of Roy and especially Aldridge, whom already has more blocks in the Summer League than Randolph had all of last year. Seriously, he and Joel will combine to make a pretty nasty tandem next year and will alter more than a few shots.

I think this group is intelligent enough to communicate, something the boys lacked last year. I heard a lot about how we lacked basketball smarts. Again with the addition of our new recruits, we haved upped our B-ball I.Q.a notch and that will hopefully lead to more W's.

Man, how many more months until the season tips off?

Roy Leads Blazers Past Wolves
posted: at 6:11 AM

Portland 78 Minnesota 65

The Trail Blazers improved to 2 and 1 in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League last night, as they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league team 78-65. The Blazers got off to a rough offensive start, as they have in all three games, and the solution in all three games has been Brandon Roy.

For highlights of last night's game, and for exclusive one-on-one interviews, click on "Summer League Central" on the front page of trailblazers.com, by the way. I had a fan e-mail me and ask about highlights, and I probably haven't been mentioning often enough that we've got them for you. Master Blazers photographer Jeff Curtin has been busting his tail, as always, down here in Vegas and has been shooting just about everything. A lot of his work is availble at Summer League Central. I should also mention that the executive producer of Blazers Broadcasting, Scott Zachry, has also been a huge help to everything we're doing down here and is a major help for me in putting together this blog and all the highlights and interviews we've been giving you. Our days have been extremely packed, and it's been very fun putting all of this stuff together. It's certainly a team effort, as always. I appreciate the notes I've been getting from many of you fans who have accurately pointed out that no other team in the NBA has been as committed to giving you this kind of coverage in what is considered the "off season." There is no off season for us.

Now, back to Roy. I've been raving about him so much some of you have called me a homer and perhaps think I've been exaggerating a bit. You've probably got a point about me being a homer, and that's fine with me. Oregonlive's Eric Marentette is now down here blogging, and for another perspective check out his game story from last night. Click here for that. You'll find I'm not the only one who's seeing Roy this way. The Oregonian's Mike Tokito is also doing a great job down here, and I encourage you to check out his thoughts on last night's game.

When Roy checked into the game last night the Blazers were down 14 to 10. Portland then went on a 14-4 run and led at the half 37-32. They led by as many as 23 in the second half, and even led by 20 in the fourth quarter before Minnesota closed it to 13 by the end.

I talked yesterday about the scrimmage that had the number-one pick in the draft Andrea Bargnani taking on the number-two pick, LaMarcus Aldridge. Last night we had the 6th pick, Roy, up against Randy Foye, the 7th pick. The Trail Blazers, on draft night, traded Foye for Roy. Foye started the game strong for Minnesota, but was held in check once Roy was inserted and got that defensive assignment. Foye ended the game with 24 points, but had just 12 going into the fourth quarter. Roy ended with 17 points and 4 assists. Brandon was also 7 for 9 from the free-throw line and again showed the ability to get to the hoop just about anytime he wants. Minnesota was double-teaming him, trying to get the ball out of his hands, and it didn't really seem to bother him.

Foye is going to be a solid player for Minnesota, and showed why he was a top-10 pick last night. He is definitely a shoot-first point guard, and has the ability to put up big numbers. I do think the Timberwolves will face some challenges with Foye, and will have to turn him into more of a distributor. KG and Ricky Davis both enjoy shooting, and I'm just not sure if there will be enough shots to go around if Foye has his heart set on being a scoring point guard.

Here's one stat for you that I found interesting when comparing Roy with Foye (something everyone seems to be doing). Foye has 77 points so far in the summer league, but has only 2 assists. Roy has 42 points and 16 assists. The interesting note is, again, Roy is not a point guard and never has been. He has certainly shown he has that ability if the team needs that from him. I interviewed Nate McMillan about this last night (an interview you can view at Summer League Central).

Portland's Hector Romero, from Venezuela, had a very nice game last night. He had a couple of very impressive dunks and has incredible energy on the floor. He ended with 14 points on 4 of 4 shooting.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. He wasn't happy with his offensive production, but he did get some good looks and he'll put those shots down given the opportunity again. He's a great presence inside for Portland and has been much more physical than I expected. He and Minnesota's J.P. Batista, out of Gonzaga, were banging around pretty good last night.

Martell Webster had a rough shooting night for Portland, and was frustrated he couldn't get his perimeter game going. He did play very solid defense and hit the defense glass hard. Webster had 12 points on just 5 of 14 shooting.

There are two games left for the Trail Blazers here in Vegas. This afternoon at 4 o'clock they take on the Washington Wizards. Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey will have the call of the game tonight on KXL-750 am at 9pm, on the tape delay.

Being the Trail Blazers play today, our Courtside Monday Night radio show will be tomorrow night. We'll be broadcasting live from the ESPNZone, inside New York New York. We'll have a great lineup of guests, and that can be heard tomorrow night from 6pm to 8 on KXL, and kxl.com if you're outside the Portland area. We plan to have Aldridge, Roy, and Kevin Pritchard, among others, live on the show.

I'll have a recap of tonight's game against Washington, later on this evening.

Your title says it all. The point gaurd running the show that everyone has a key role in. Looking at Roy's vs Foy's numbers looks more like Foy was a 2. Too many times we have seen "scoring" point gaurds (including one homegrown rookie of the year) do wonderfull jobs at scoring while playing point just to see the opposing team win. Roy's ability and intelligence to quickly adapt his game to bring what portland needed to WIN has me giddy over the possibility that portland might (cross my fingers) have actually started making winning descisions.

I agree with you happycamper. I do think Randy Foye is a great player. But, as I mentioned, with Garnett and Ricky Davis the Wolves need a floor general (not that Foye doesn't have this ability). He's got 77 points now in the summer league and just 2 assists. And, I've read this morning that some people believe Foye got the better of Roy in the game last night. I don't know how anyone who watched that game could honestly think that. Foye had 24 points, but 12 of them came in garbage time when Portland was well in control. Roy held Foye in check in the first half when Portland built its lead, and was able to go by Foye just about anytime he wanted to on the offensive end. When Roy didn't get a lay up, he drew fouls, often times on the help defenders. He shot 9 free throws in the game. And, again, Roy is not going to be playing point guard much for Portland, so we won't see this Foye-Roy head-to-head matchup in the regular season much. And, I've also heard some national writers saying Foye is their favorite to win Rookie of the Year. I just don't see how he's going to get enough shots in that Minnesota offense to consistently post big numbers. I don't think it would be a good thing for them if he is. I'd rather see KG and Davis get the bulk of the shots if I'm them. This is nothing against Foye, but I just disagree with some of the things that were said, and written, after last night's game.

Hey I have noticed that Hector Romero has been very solid in the past 2 games. I know that the blazers dont want to sign another contract and save that 15th roster spot but if he has a few spectacular games do you think they could sign him? (he is a forward, it could help)

Mike,
In college Roy was explosive and had those 35 point games back to back that made everyone go "wow." Hopefully he can do that this year for us. But I think Martell is going to have the best season or at least best-improved season out of our young bunch of players. With regards to Roy, what about him ever playing point during the regular season? With his success so far (although it is only summer league) do you think he'll ever see time there? Already we have 2, and 3 with Sergio. If only we were so stacked at all positions we would be in great shape!

yep I know all the hype around Roy and all the new guys, but if there's a guy you really have to keep an eye on its Hector Romero. maybe he wasn't drafted, but this guy has PROVED himself on the profesional basketball. he was an all star on his college years in New Orleans and its the captain of the Venezuelan national team (which by the way its going to the world champ. in Japan this summer) he has played in europe and againts others though national teams such as team USA and argentina, overshadowing Manu ginobli. If I was part of the Trailblazer management I will definetely add this guy to the roster. Romero has the potential of not only being a reserve..but a regular.

All i can say is that the new guys do have a lot of potential. They got the skills, height, touch, etc. All they need is a few games to get their acts in harmony. With the oLD GUYS in their side, I,m crossing my fingers playoffs is in our sight. The portlad management, of course, has a reason when they work overtime in the draft day. I'm in their side... i've seen them play, ang i can't wait to see them banging against the greatest players in the world..... GOOD LUCK PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS

Simply said, Roy is the bestof the 06 draft. I'm so grateful for the pick of Brandon. When the Blazers picked Foye my heart dropped, to rise again when the trade was announced. The pain of the last seasons are leaving with much anticipation with the future. It will be fun watching the youth get up to speed win or whatever. COME BACK FANS!! The future is now, & don't forget to vote.

Coming to Vegas and seeing the players up close has been awesome. I can personally say that Roy, Webster and all of the players and those who are associated with the Blazer organization have been wonderful and very personable. Portland Roy, Aldridge are the real deal. Webster has been a leader out on the floor on offense and especially on defence. Tonight against the Wizards he was talking and explaining to Aldridge about defending the post and why he was (Aldridge) called for the foul. Also tonight in the fourth quarter when the game was close Roy, Webster, Aldridge and Outlaw showed great confidence in themselves and each other and hustled till the final whistle.
Portland get ready, because I think Rip City is coming back. We as fans have been pleading with management for a team to stand behind again. I feel they have really laid down a solid foundation with this draft, now it is our turn to step up.

Aldridge Battles Bargnani in Scrimmage
posted: 7/8/2006 at 3:40 PM

It is always news when the number-one pick in the draft meets the number-two pick. That happened on Saturday morning, at Durango High School in Las Vegas, in a small practice gym. The Portland Trail Blazers summer league team, with a day off from play in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League, scrimmaged both the Denver Nuggets, and then the Toronto Raptors.

After playing in a game Friday night that ended at around 9 o'clock in Las Vegas, the Blazers were up early to go through the scrimmages. They opened the day against Denver, and played one half of basketball. There were referees on hand, including veteran NBA official Rodney Mott, and the scoreboard was operating, but there were no fans, and only one member of the media (who covers the Nuggets) was there. The only other one's watching were employees of NBA teams. For what it's worth, the Blazers won the first two quarters against Denver's summer team, and then moved into a secondary practice gym to take on Toronto.

We had seen the Toronto Raptors arrive at the high school, including number-one pick Andrea Bargnani, and head to a smaller practice gymnasium. Following the Blazers scrimmage against Denver, we also moved to the little gym to take on the Raptors. I was excited to see if we'd indeed get to see LaMarcus Aldridge take on Bargnani for a couple of quarters of the second scrimmage.

Both Aldridge and Bargnani started the scrimmage for their respective teams, and guarded each other. Aldridge was very agressive and was able to successfully follow Bargnani out to the perimeter to keep him from scoring. Bargnani was taken out of the scrimmage midway through the first quarter, but returned moments later and played the rest of the way. Aldridge played the entire half. Neither player lit up the scoreboard, but clearly, at least down low, Aldridge was the more physical, and more polished player. It could even be said that he looked to be more NBA ready.

Granted, this was just a scrimmage in a small high school gym, so I'm not trying to make too much out of this. Aldridge did have an impressive slam dunk inside, and hit a couple of foul-line jumpers. At the defensive end, Bargnani posted up Aldridge several times, and on one occasion tried to take the ball across the key and shoot a baby-hook shot, but Aldridge swatted it away. It was a good example of Aldridge's length and athleticism, as he appeared to have been beaten on the play, but recovered to get the block. Bargnani has impressive size, and stepped back to hit a three-pointer late in the second quarter, his only bucket of the scrimmage. Still, he has great range, and has a great NBA build. He'll be a very solid player for Toronto, if not immediately, then certainly down the road. The Blazers ended up beating Toronto in that second scrimmage by seven points.

The Trail Blazer summer league team started the day slowly, and looked to be very tired, understandably so, following Friday night's game. But, by the end of the second scrimmage, they were looking as sharp as I've seen them here in Las Vegas. I talked to Aldridge after the second game, and asked him how he felt. He said, "a bit tired," and smiled. He continued, "we played very well in that second game, sucked it up, and played great defense." I asked for LaMarcus' thoughts on Bargnani and he said, "he's going to be a great player. He'll add muscle as he grows and has a great outside touch."

I've been gushing over Brandon Roy, and I'm not the only one. He once again showed that he's got a complete NBA game, and was the best player on the floor. He is so quick, has great handles, and most of all, is very physical. He's been deadly from the perimeter, and can get to the hoop just about anytime he wants. Roy probably had the most impressive play of the scrimmage today, when he flew in out of nowhere to grab a missed shot with his right hand, then switched it to his left in one motion and spun up a reverse lay in on the other side of the hoop. It looked so easy and so smooth, like everything he does. I mentioned to Aldridge after the scrimmage "how about Brandon?" LaMarcus smiled, shook his head, and said, "man, he's so strong."

Martell Webster continues to impress as well, and played very well against Toronto. Denver coach George Karl was watching the scrimmage against the Raptors, and at one point turned to Blazers president Steve Patterson and said, "wow, that kid can flat out shoot it." Toronto general manager Brian Colangelo was also on hand and said to Patterson at one point, "congratulations on your moves on draft day. It was fun to watch." Patterson responded, "it was fun to be a part of."

Jarrett Jack and Dan Dickau went through light workouts while the team scrimmaged today. Trainer Jay Jensen ran them through some shooting, and full court footwork drills. Dan heads home tomorrow, and says his surgically-repaired Achilles tendon is feeling "great."

The Trail Blazers return to action in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League tomorrow, when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at 5 o'clock. That game can be heard live on KXL 750am in the Portland area.

assuming we can lose Randolph and Miles and add just one veteran forward to the mix in their place, i feel we are two years from contention and if we play our cards right, possibly remaining one for the better part of a decade. Imagine if you will Pryzbilla at Center, Aldridge Outlaw Webster and said veteran in the frontcourt, Roy Blake and Jack and one more in the backcourt. That blazer fans is a team to fear in the near future.

Hey, Mike, i think it's fantastic that Portland has the games available to be heard on the radio. I'm surprised there are no other franchises that are doing the same. It goes a long way in showing the organization is committed to the fans.
It also seems that Portland is the most active in reporting what is going on in the league. For die hard Blazer fans hoping to hear something everyday, it's great to see the enthusiasm is matched by the organization. Usually, it's not this easy to follow the maturation of rookies and young players until at least preseason.

Blazers Easily Handle Golden State
posted: at 12:20 AM

Portland 87 Golden State 70

It's always nice to get a win, even if we spend so much time at summer league talking about how the final score doesn't mean that much. Tonight the Trail Blazers used a balanced attack to defeat Golden State's summer league team 87-70. Travis Outlaw led the way with 15 points, and looked much better following a tough outing in the first game at the Toshiba Vegas Summer League on Thursday.

Outlaw used his athleticism to get to the rim, and wowed the crowd by going high to finish an alley-oop from Martell Webster in the first half. Martell Webster, who scored 29 in the first game on Thursday, scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds against the Warriors.

The most interesting matchup of the night was inside, as LaMarcus Aldridge, the second pick in last week's NBA Draft, went up against the ninth pick, Patrick O'Bryant from Bradley. Aldridge had the clear advantage, and showed he deserved to go at least seven picks higher then O'Bryant. LaMarcus finished the game with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, and 2 steals. He also had several hustle plays, and is obviously starting to get a grasp of the Blazers' offense. Aldridge once again showed his shooting range, by hitting several perimeter jumpers, and was able to finish in the paint. His inside game helped the Blazers outrebound the Warriors 45-28.

Brandon Roy had 13 points and four assists on the night, but the numbers don't begin to tell the story. He played the point-guard position most of the night, and once again showed that he's quick enough to defend smaller guards, and has the ball-handling skills to bring it up against pressure. I happened to be sitting in front of the Minnesota Timberwolves coaching staff, and overheard one of the coaches saying "Roy does everything well," and "has no weaknesses in his game at all." I know this is just the summer league, and I don't mean to get overly excited about his abilities, but he is extremely impressive in his play, his leadership, and how he runs the offense. Again, keep in mind, he's not considered a point guard, but has shown that he can certainly handle that position if needed.

A very nice suprise tonight for the Blazers was Kevin Pinkney. He doesn't have much of a shot to make this Blazers roster come the regular season, but he has shown in the first two games that he has NBA talent. He showed his shooting range in this game, and is big enough to play several different positions. Pinkney ended the game with 14 points on 7-8 shooting.

Thursday we got a chance to talk to new Blazer Raef LaFrentz, and tonight Dan Dickau was on hand, as he made the trip to Las Vegas to meet the coaching staff and see some of his new teammates. As you can imagine, Dickau is very excited to be heading home to play for the Blazers for the second time. I had a chance to interview him before tonight's game. Check out Summer League Central to watch the interview.

I was taking with Dickau this morning in the hotel lobby and we started talking about some of his new teammates. I asked him about Brandon Roy and he told me he'd actually met Roy several years ago. Roy was strongly considering attending Gonzaga, and Dickau hosted Roy on his recruiting trip.

This is not the only story like this on the team. It turns out that when Joel Przybilla was making his college choice he visited Kansas, among other schools. His host on his visit to KU was Raef LaFrentz.

First-round draft pick Sergio Rodriguez was also in town today and spent the evening sitting on the Trail Blazers bench. I had a chance to interview him on camera as well, and he was a little reluctant at first. He explained how his English is not very strong, but he did fine. Trail Blazers video coordinator Kaleb Canales, who does a bit of everything for this franchise, served as an interpreter tonight. He speaks Spanish and was walking Sergio through some of the offensive sets the Blazers use. Rodriguez is returning to Spain tomorrow and will get set to play with his national team in the World Championships in Japan. I told him how many e-mails I've been getting from fans of his in Spain. He said that made him feel good. For the interview and a message from Sergio in Spanish, check out Summer League Central's video section.

As I've mentioned several times this week, if you scan the stands at the Vegas Summer League you see a lot of familiar faces. I concentrated on one section behind one of the benches tonight and saw, and I'm not exaggerating, George Karl, Mike Montgomerie, Kevin McHale, Randy Whittman, Duane Casey, Vinny Del Negro, Mike D'Antoni, Marc Ivaroni, Adrian Dantley, Buck Williams, Alvin Gentry, Byron Scott, Chris Mullin, Danny Ferry, Eric Musselman, Ron Artest, Marcus Camby, and Jerry Tarkanian. That was just in one section. Oh, and I saw Mike Rice.

Tomorrow the Trail Blazers will practice, and scrimmage, but don't play a summer league game. I'll be at practice and will have a chance to speak to some of the guys. I'll have an update for you tomorrow evening. This town is completely nuts, by the way. If you're into people watching, and I am, there isn't a better place to be than Vegas. I was thinking of this line from the movie Intolerable Cruelty. Miles Massey, while playing the slots, says "You see, people get to Las Vegas, and all of a sudden the rules of the moral universe don't apply. God is dead, and it's like all things are possible.." And, it seems the people wearing the smallest, skimpiest outfits, perhaps shouldn't be.

I wonder if you might be able to also give us an idea about what these young guys do in their "off" time down there in Sin City. I think only a few of them might be over 21 but in Las Vegas age doesn't really matter as much as being a professional ball player. Are they given opportunities to go out unchaperoned or are things pretty strict as far as where and what they can and cannot do?

To answer your question yellowjackets, I'm not sure they really know. Roy is playing the point in the summer league out of need. With Telfair traded, and Jarrett recovering from surgery, they really didn't have any choice. Roy has played some at the off-guard spot, but has mostly played the point. This is just showing us how versatile he is. Jarrett, by the way, is looking good. He told me today he feels great and will be going full speed by August.

Also, blazerbelieverforever, you are exactly right about Kaleb Canales. I'm not sure I know anyone who is as hard-working and as well-liked as Kaleb. He's extremely humble, and gets embarassed when I tell him how important he is to this franchise. The role of video coordinator is vital. Kaleb does just about everything else too.

Rockets Edge Blazers in First Vegas Game
posted: 7/6/2006 at 4:42 PM

Houston 88 Portland 82

The Houston Rockets summer league team used incredible outside shooting to defeat the Trail Blazers summer league team on Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Toshiba Vegas Summer League at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, 88-82.

The Rockets were 10 for 17 from behind the three-point line and shot 56 percent as a team. They were led by former Oklahoma State star John Lucas, who had 26 points, but it was the long-range shooting of former St.Joseph's star Pat Carroll, and Steve Novak, who played at Marquette, who combined to shoot 8 for 12 from behind the arc, that did the big damage. Novak was drafted in the second round (32nd overall) by Houston last week, and looked very good today.

The Trail Blazers were led by Martell Webster's 29 points. He got off to a slow start in the game, but came on to shoot 10 for 19, including 5 for 8 from behind the three-point line. He was clearly the best player on the floor for either team, and looks like he's gained strength in his upper body. I talked to him briefly after the game and congratulated him on a nice effort. He said, "yeah, but we lost." That's what makes him great, and so likable.

Martell's game improved every time rookie Brandon Roy stepped on the floor for the Blazers. Roy was used at the point-guard spot most of this game, not a position he's used to playing, but was very impressive in this game, scoring 12 points and dishing out 8 assists. He was concentrating so much on getting everyone involved and on running the offense, he didn't look to do much on his own. When he did, he easily got to the hoop, and showed great strength with his ability to finish in the paint. He also went down to the block and posted up his defender several times.

Keep in mind, Roy has only had one night to learn this offense. I was sitting in front of a couple of scouts from another team and they were gushing over his game. I heard it mentioned several times that it appeared Roy was playing at a different speed than everyone else on the floor. His ball-handling skills are much better than expected, and he's quick enough to guard opposing point guards. In short, it's very clear after even just one game, why Roy was so in demand on draft day. It's true that he was probably the most NBA-ready player in the draft. The Trail Blazers were a different team when he was on the floor. The best part is, he can play three positions, and has the poise of a guy who played four years of major college basketball.

LaMarcus Aldridge had a good first day in the summer league. He showed his outside shooting range, and after a slow start, scored 8 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. Aldridge played some at the power-forward position and also played some center in the second half. He has great back-to-the-basket moves, and even stepped out and hit the perimeter jumper several times. He had an impressive rebound slam dunk, and is a good defender. He blocked a shot (even though he wasn't given credit for it) and altered several others with his length. You're going to be suprised at how athletic he is and how well he runs the floor for a guy nearly 7 feet tall. Rice, who was sitting next me, as always, was going nuts for Aldridge during the game. At one point he said to me, "I'm not sure if he's more like Dwight Howard or Kevin Garnett." I know, Rice is dramatic. I said back, "will you give the kid at least two summer league games before you start tossing up comparisons?"

Travis Outlaw had a tough first game, and appeared to be trying a little too hard to make things happen. He shot just 3 for 12 from the floor, and scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the game. The Blazers have been considering playing him at the power forward position in the summer league, and have been telling him to crash the boards at both ends. The effort was certainly there, but I'm sure Travis was unhappy with his overall showing.

Raef LaFrentz, one of the newest Trail Blazers, was on hand to watch the first summer league game, and spent most of the game sitting by player personnel director Kevin Pritchard. Before the game started LaFrentz spent some time with Nate McMillan, and talked to all the members of the coaching staff and met the players on the summer league team. I had a chance to visit with him, and he told me after the initial shock of the draft-day trade wore off, he started getting very exciting about joining this Blazers team. I think people have underplayed the importance of this acquisition. He'll give the team a different look at the center spot. He can stick the deep outside shot and should really stretch opposing defenses. How much will Zach Randolph love that? Raef is living in his off-season home in Iowa, and was more than happy to make the trip to Vegas to see some of his new teammates and new coaching staff.

There are always recognizable faces in the stands at the summer league, and today there was a reunion of former Blazers at one point. Geoff Petrie and Wayne Cooper, now with the Kings of course, were sitting by Buck Williams, who is helping out with Golden State's summer league team. Buck and Cooper were teammates in Portland. Buck looks like he could still play in the league. His smile comes so easy, and he's so friendly, I had to remind myself this was one of the toughest customers in the league during his era in the NBA. He's living in Maryland and said he really misses the Northwest.

The Trail Blazers summer league team gets back to work tomorrow night (Friday) when they take on Golden State. That game, like today's, can be heard on a tape-delayed basis on KXL 750 AM in the Portland area, at 9pm. Talk to you later. I'm going to go watch Rice's wife lose more of her husband's money. I wish you could see it. They don't allow cameras near the tables, otherwise I'd post pictures of it.

Great story. Webster got 29 points? Insane! I, for one, am very excited to hear of his improvement. I hope he is able to bring that level of play to the table this year. Roy was roy, you know we are all going to be holding signs up "Roy for ROY!" this year. A little disappointed in Aldridge's performance but, it is only one game. I hope these kids mesh well together and learn the nba game well. I think the future is bright, bright and bright. (This is coming from someone who has always disliked the blazers. Watching how they did their draft and their trades, I have a whole new outlook.)

Keep us up to date

With the friendship of Webster and Roy, the blazers will open up the low post for Joel, Raef and Zack. This is going to be a great summer league and an even better year!

With the friendship of Webster and Roy, the blazers will open up the low post for Joel, Raef and Zack. This is going to be a great summer league and an even better year!

Thanks Mike. This is what great coverage is all about. You are the best. Now if our friends at the Oregonian can take note maybe they will become more positive too (they are today).

For all our Spanish friends here is one Oregonian looking forward to having Sergio with us this year. The summer league is a chance for new players and guys wanting to get extra work but the real work seems to be in training camp. Thanks for the support. 0h - and we will all be watching for Spain in the world championship this year, hoping you do well except when you play USA of course.

Mike, no need to sugarcoat it. Travis Outlaw was absolutely horrible. I watched the game. He looked out of control and totally bogged down the Blazer offense. He doesn't make anyone better because he doesn't seem to be able to process multiple things at the same time. When he gets it in his head he is going to shoot, a shot is going up, whether it is in the offense or not. I like Travis a lot as a person, but I think the window is closing on Outlaw. Soon, the "great potential" tag is going to get dropped, and other teams are going to see him as just another athletic guy that doesn't understand the game and can't translate athleticism into basketball skill.

Honeymoon in Vegas
posted: 7/5/2006 at 10:07 PM

It really sort of feels that way today as the Trail Blazers are set to begin play in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League at UNLV. We arrived in Vegas yesterday afternoon, and being we stayed at New York New York last summer, had a pretty good idea of where to find things. There are couple of other NBA teams staying here, and the rest of the teams are also all on the Las Vegas Strip.

The team will play five games, beginning with today's first game against the Houston Rockets summer league team at 1pm. You'll be able to hear all of Portland's games on KXL on a tape-delayed basis at 9pm. To my knowledge, no other NBA team broadcasts summer league games on the radio. We're looking forward to bringing you these games, and exclusive interviews, hightlights, photos, and game recaps right here on trailblazers.com.

Last night the Blazers summer league team arrived in Las Vegas and immediately went to work. LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy just signed on Tuesday, and missed the little pre-summer league training camp in Lake Tahoe, so were brought up to speed last night. Assistant coaches Dean Demopolous, Monty Williams, and head coach Nate McMillan helped the new players with some plays the team will be using in the next week. We were with them last night at Cox Pavilion at UNLV.

I'll start with Aldridge and will simply say that the kid has got star quality written all over him. I realize this was just a session to go over plays and learn spacing, but everything Aldridge does is silky smooth, and his presence and coachability comes though to anyone in the gym. He effortlessly turned to the hoop, showed his shooting range, and ability to score with either hand in the paint.

Brandon Roy has an explosive first step and a great shooting touch. I asked him after the short workout about adjusting to Coach McMillan's system. He said it's tough getting all of this down in just one night, but says he already has a pretty good feel for what the team does on offense and defense. Both Roy and Aldridge carry themselves with a calm and confidence you don't normally find in NBA rookies. They are also both so personable and spend a lot of time smiling and truly seem to be enjoying every minute of this. It's hard not to get excited about the future watching these guys work.

Martell Webster was the other Blazer involved in last night's little workout. He was going through the sets with the players and was doing as much coaching as the coaches. Martell even made a couple of comments like "these rookies have a lot to learn," as if he's been in the league for years. Roy would just roll his eyes and smile.

The Trail Blazers take on Houston tomorrow, Golden State on Friday, Minnesota Saturday, Washington on Monday, and Phoenix on Wednesday. Again, we'll have all those games on the radio for you. Tuesday night there is no game, but we'll have Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, live from the ESPNZone here at our hotel New York New York. The show will air at its normal time, from 6pm to 8 on KXL. If you're outside the area and want to hear the show, log on to kxl.com and you can listen live. We've got a tremendous lineup of guests planned for the show on Tuesday.

In Portland on Wednesday, the Blazers announced first-round pick Sergio Rodriguez to the community. He is now heading for Las Vegas to join us. He won't be playing, and will only be here tomorrow afternoon. He'll then head back to Europe to join his national team as it prepares for the World Championships in Japan.

I mentioned yesterday that Raef LaFrentz is headed to Vegas to check out some of the youngsters on his new team. Jarrett Jack is here now as well. Zach Randolph will possibly be coming down to join us, and Joel Przybilla could even possibly show up. He's got some things to work out at home before he can commit, but he did tell me today he'd love to make a trip down here to see the rest of the guys and the coaches. I'll certainly let you know if these guys make the trip.

I'll be talking to you later, with a complete recap of the first summer league game. Here is the Blazers summer league roster, once again. The only change is Nikoloz Tskitishvili is no longer on the roster. He has been waived.

12 LaMarcus Aldridge F/C 6-11 245 R 7-19-85 Texas
4 Brandon Bowman F 6-9 223 R 9-15-84 Georgetown

Mike I feel like I've found a treasure in finding your blog. I love what you're taking the time to do - it's golden. Will Sergio sign a contract tomorrow? I know that you said previously he would sign Wednesday, but in the latest it just said the team announced him and that he'd come to Vegas. I am trying to figure out what we'll do with our glut at PG if he signs. Dickau can't be traded for 90 days after the draft-day trade can he?

I can't wait no more for watching Sergio playing with the Blazers, it will be amazing. I hope he adapts to the country, the culture and the team as soon as possible because it will be very important for a young man like him, and he will be able to play his best next season. Be patient with him and take care of him, he is absolutely crazy about playing in the Trail Blazers and he won't dissapoint you. Don't expect him to make a great impact in his first year, but if he gets minutes and confidence he won't need more than two years to be the starting point guard in any NBA team.
I have to congratulate Mike for this blog and the Blazers organization for the magnificient web page.
When will be Sergio's 11 jersey available? How much will it cost? I'm starting to save money to buy it......

Bradley - good question about Dan Dickau. The 3 month moritorium on trades is if a veteran free agent signs a contract he then cannot be traded for 3 months from signing. Dickau signed with Boston last year so I think this will not apply. (Article VII, section 8 (d))

Mike - thanks for the coverage. Will be listening tonight.

I think this summer league is SO exciting and the perfect chance for the start of the NEW Blazer team to show it's face. Is there anyway to find out the NBA TV schedule so that I can catch some of the games? I have looked and can't find it so far, but I don't want to miss out. I love listening on the radio, but it's just not the same. Thanks! and thanks again for the great blogs!!

Have you seen Sergio's face when posing with his Blazer jersey? He seems to be over the moon about being there in Portland. He's just a kid, almost like the ones that surround him, but don't get fooled by his appearance because my man can kill anyone with his moves when he's on the court.
He's lovely guy. And you guys in Portland are gonna love my countryman fella. We already do over here in Spain.

Also, it is more interesting and fun listening to people that know the team, like you and Rice, then others on the OTHER Sports radio station, that just rant when they don't get their way....

Keep up the great work, and so far, this summer has been an A+. I look forward to hearing the games this summer on radio, whereas in the past, I could care less.

A Wild 4th of July in Blazerland

What an incredible day for the franchise. Again. Not only did the team get its top two draft picks signed, but Bill Duffy, the agent for Joel Przybilla, has been reported as saying his client will be signing with the Trail Blazers, apparently ending all speculation.

To cap off an incredible Tuesday/Wednesday for the Blazers, they'll be signing their other first-round pick Sergio Rodriguez tomorrow, as the team heads for Las Vegas to begin play in the summer league.

I mentioned in yesterday's blog that it appeared to be good news when the Chicago Bulls were able to lure Ben Wallace away from the Detroit Pistons. Chicago had been rumored to be a possible new home for Przybilla. Tuesday morning the news was starting to break around the country that Przybilla had turned down Detroit and San Antonio, and would be re-signing with the Trail Blazers. That was according to Duffy.

Duffy told The Oregonian's Jason Quick Tuesday, "I think it came down to a number of things at the end of the day – first and foremost he and his wife absolutley love Portland,'' Duffy said. "The community, the people, the lifestyle. Joel was impressed with the moves they made in the draft. He felt like they were serious about changing. And at the end of the day, Joel is a loyalist. Two years ago, when nobody else believed in him, Portland signed him to a two year deal. He felt very strongly about that.''

LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy signed their rookie contracts with the Blazers on Tuesday. There was only a slight delay, and the players flew to Lake Tahoe last night and went through their first practice with their new team. Today they'll fly with the team to Las Vegas to being play in the summer league. Rodriguez will also fly to Las Vegas, but will only stay for a short time and won't be playing. He's returning to Europe to join his national team, and will be taking part in the World Championships in Japan later this summer. As I mentioned yesterday, he will be on the Blazers roster next season.

Tomorrow the Blazers Broadcasting team, including yours truly, will be flying to Las Vegas to join the team. We've got some great coverage planned, and I'll be blogging every day during summer league. I'll keep you up to date on how everyone looks, will provide you with photos, game stories, and exclusive interviews. Trail Blazers.com will keep you loaded with everything you need to know from Las Vegas. Keep in mind that on Tuesday, the 11th, we'll be hosting our radio show, Courtside Monday Night presented by L.A. Weight Loss, live from the New York New York Hotel and Casino. We'll be inside the ESPNZone inside New York New York hosting the show. We've got some great guests planned, including some of the newest Blazers.

Jarrett Jack won't be playing in the summer league, but he'll be there with the team. I'm also hearing Raef LaFrentz, who the Blazers picked up in that draft-day trade with Boston, will be there to watch the games and to get to know his new team. We're also hearing Zach Randolph may make an appearence to watch the games and see his new teammates.

It will be a terrific week. I'll talk to you from Vegas tomorrow.

what a great day for the Blazers. I am absolutly thrilled that Joel sighed and we have some great positive players on the roster now. Really helped Joel to decide to come back, I remember how Joel was upset last year, maybe this year we have a lineup that will want to play hard no matter what.
even if we have a bad year like last year, but play hard together as a team, all the lineup will get better because of that and grow together.

GO BLAZERS, win or lose you still ROCK!!!!! humble, great natured, positive, friendly, hard working and more. you guys are all ready winners.

I just looked at the videos of Sergio, and all I can say is WOW! we all know what Steve Nash can do as a player, Sergio has those same skills. can't wait for next year for him to play. Pheonix made a huge mistake letting the rights for sergio to go, and Blazers made another great draft day move to get him.

I know this is a young team, but with the team players we have and the attitudes, "the team" is going to be scary for opponants, from the starting line up, to the reserves, there is no seperation from ability and good attitude, the reserves will be scary too.

for me I can't think of how I have ever been so exited about the blazers, even in the era of Drexler and team. This is the team that I love and repsect more then ever, from the GM and coach to the players.
GO BLAZERS!!

Sergio to Sign Wednesday
posted: 7/3/2006 at 10:13 PM

As I told you yesterday, Sergio Rodriguez, who was taken late in the first round by the Trail Blazers will indeed be playing in the NBA next season and will not be staying in Europe. I can't tell you how many messages I've received asking that question, and I was happy yesterday to finally be able to give you all an answer. It's also great that all of you Rodriguez fans in Spain have taken the time to investigate "Spanish Chocolate's" new team, and thanks for contacting me in the process, and reading the blog.

Sergio will arrive today, and with sign with the Trail Blazers tomorrow. At least that's the plan. He will even get a chance to head to Las Vegas and be around the summer league team for an afternoon before heading back to Europe to meet up with his national team. They are getting set for the World Championships, which are in Japan this summer. So, even though Rodriguez won't be playing with the summer league team, I think it's important that he will get a chance to meet everyone, including the coaching staff. I plan on talking to him when I get to Las Vegas on Wednesday, and hopefully we can get his comments on tape and have them for you on trailblazers.com. I'll do my best.

I'm already anticipating the next set of questions from you fans. My guess is you're thinking something like, "with Sergio on the roster next season won't that give the Trail Blazers four point guards?" The answer is yes. Steve Blake, Jarrett Jack, Dan Dickau, and Sergio. You could even say there are five, because Brandon Roy can play the point and plans to get plenty of work at that position in Las Vegas. Flexibility is always a nice thing to have at any position, and obviously Portland now has that at the point. What they do about that, if anything, will be decided in the near future.

So, Ben Wallace is headed for the Chicago Bulls. That is great news for Blazers fans hoping to see Joel Przybilla return to Portland. Wallace's signing doesn't mean Joel is back, by any means, but it does remove the Bulls from the Przybilla chase. Chicago was one of the few teams that could have offered significantly more than Portland. There are still several teams out there chasing Przybilla. Who should you really worry about now? If I had to guess, I'd say San Antonio. The Spurs have liked Joel for some time, and even though they can't quite offer what the Blazers can, they can come close, and obviously playing next to Tim Duncan is a nice selling point. The Trail Blazers have already made their formal pitch to Joel, and from what I heard, it went very well. The recruitment process continues on a daily basis. It will not be an easy decision for Joel to make. He is agonizing over it as we speak. He told me as much on the phone on Sunday night.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy have still yet to sign their contracts with the Trail Blazers, so they haven't taken part in the pre-summer league camp in Lake Tahoe to this point. Even though there is a rookie scale, and signing them won't be a problem, these things sometimes take a little longer than you would think. There are still some details that need to be worked out, but I'm confident they will be, and the two players will be taking part in Las Vegas.

Brian Wheeler is in Lake Tahoe with the summer league team, and I talked to him a short time ago to get an update on how things went on Monday.

Here is Wheels' Report.

"The Trail Blazers had just one practice today, after going through two-a-days the first couple of days. It's still too bad that Aldridge and Roy aren't here, but they will be soon, or at least will join us in Las Vegas. As for everyone else, it was just another day to prepare and learn the system before games start later this week.

Martell Webster continues to make an effort to be a leader on this team, and is showing some assertiveness. He is very talkative during practice and has almost been like another coach on the floor. It's been great to see.

Travis Outlaw always seems to thrive in this enviornment and has played well in past summer leagues. He still has a lot of work to do, but it appears his shot has improved, and he's in good physical condition. It's a great opportunity for Travis right now, and he's coming up on a big, big season in his career.

Ha, who wasn't in the best shape possible last year at summer league, appears to be much better this week. The biggest thing about Ha that stands out to me, is that he's so much more comfortable with the language and the culture and is maturing as a young man. It's great to see him take coaching, understand it, and then immediately apply it to his game. It'm very curious to see how he plays against some of the other big men in Las Vegas.

Speaking of big men, Joel Freeland has played well in practice so far. He runs the floor very well, has a great shooting touch, and is much more physical than I expected him to be. One of his complaints about the EuroLeague is that they don't allow physical play. He says he fouled out of a lot of games last season, and was always in foul trouble. He loves the NBA because they let you bang a lot more. That's encouraging coming from a 19-year old who needs to add muscle. It sounds like he's certainly willing to mix it up. Also, Nikoloz Tskishvili has looked good, and is excited to be here. He sees what a great opportunity this is for him, and has a great attitude.

By the way, I've been wanting to get you a summer league roster, and here it is."

12 LaMarcus Aldridge F/C 6-11 245 R Texas
4 Brandon Bowman F 6-9 223 R Georgetown
17 Sean Dockery G 6-2 185 R Duke
14 Joel Freeland F 6-10 225 R Gran Canaria Fadesa (Spain)

Hi Mike & company!!! Here I am writing in your blog again from Spain, something that I'm very happy of.
Apparently, Sergio Rodriguez will be flying out to Portland by the time you get this from me. And I gotta tell you that according to what I've read and heard in the papers and radios over here, he is eager to come over to Portland to get to know the city and his new teammates-to-be. And of course, the coach Nate and the rest of the staff too.
To all those who don't know Sergio's character, I'll tell you that he will come across to tou as a down-to-earth and very likeable guy that you Blazers'fans are gonna love forever. I can assure that.
If Sergio is dying for the next NBA season to get started, I can't tell you in words how eager we all Spanish basketball fans are too!!!! We are all loking forward to it!!!
And finally, this might sound romantic, but it's true: a piece of our hearts is a Blazer from now on. GO BLAZERS, GO!!!!!

Several years ago in spain we were sure Pau was going to be an important player in NBA and now we think Sergio is born to play there (like Navarro , Garbajosa, Calderon or Fran Vazquez),by the way remenber: the next pearl from spain in nba draft 2007 will be Rudy Fernandez. Perhaps due to his age and his physichal weakness it will take him two or three years but his skills are NBA for sure.

Does anybody know if Nedzad Sinanovic can play at all? If Joel heads to detroit (or San Antonio) it seems like he might be a cheap stop-gap for the season if portland winds up high and dry at center. Also, if HA isn't yet ready to play even a back-up center roll, is he ever going to be? We could sure use some minutes from him at the 5 spot this season. Is Nedzad Sinanovic such a project that he can't even sit the bench for portland but HA can? I think that Nikoloz Tskitishvili sounds interesting too, has never really been given minutes in the NBA from what I can tell. He's listed as a forward but who knows?

Love the blog mike, me and my family cant wait to be watching the new blazers this season with you calling the games!

It's good to see that somebody is interested in reporting us about Sergio. Because in the web is difficult to be in the know about that. In Spain, news arrives with a bit 'lag', so.. Thanks Mike!!

P.D. Did you see what a enormous receiving has any word about Sergio? We are expecting....

One more from me today now that I've heard the news that Przybilla is staying. What a day! The new look Blazers will have a welcomed familier face starting at the center spot!! I think that Joel will stay healthy this year and have the best season of his career. Everytime I see Joel swat away a lay-up or grab his fifth rebound of the first quarter I sure am glad we have the big guy down there. I doubt that Joel ever reads these but just in case I have to say: THANK YOU JOEL! Looking forward to see you in the blazers starting line up for the next few seasons at least!

Hey Mike, I wonder if you think that Nate is going to give Travis Outlaw more playing time this season?. He did really good on the last few game before the season end. And due to you, he has improved alot, I think he deserve more minutes.

We are thrilled he has commited to sign with the Blazers for the next few years!! Please tell him he made a great decision and with him at the post our future looks much brighter and things will progress quicker than any of us thought. Thanks for all of the good work!!

Summer League Training Camp
posted: 7/2/2006 at 10:30 PM

The Trail Blazers summer league team is in Lake Tahoe preparing for the Las Vegas Summer League. Things got underway on Saturday, and continued on Sunday. Brian Wheeler is with the team in Tahoe, and filed his first report with me on Saturday night.

Before I get into Wheels' Sunday report, I should tell you that I ran into Jarrett Jack today at the Blazers practice facility in Tualatin. He is going to Las Vegas with the team (something I wasn't sure about), but won't be playing due to his recent ankle surgery. I'm happy to report that he looked good yesterday when I saw him, and he said he has recently been cleared to begin shooting and light workouts. I watched him for about 30 minutes, and he looked to be coming along nicely from surgery. We were the only two people at the practice facility and when I yelled at him across the court he jumped a mile. I don't think he expected anyone else to be there on a warm Sunday afternoon. We also talked about what the Blazers did on draft night, and his eyes lit up. Trading Sebastian Telfair was a big endorsement for him, and he realizes that.

A very interesting situation to watch at summer league is how Brandon Roy fares at the point guard spot. He's not really considered a point, but he feels he can play three different positions. With no Telfair at summer league we'll get a good idea, early, how Roy handles the point. It's nice to know he'll have Jarrett there with him, to perhaps guide him a bit and help him with some of the basics of the offense.

We've already seen a couple of suprising signings on the free agent market (well, not signings because you can't sign until July 12th, but they've agreed to deals) and we could be seeing more this week. I know Blazers fans are closely watching the Joel Przybilla sweepstakes. I spoke with Joel on the phone last night and he said he's handling all of this well, and just wants to know where he's playing next season. He's told us, on several occasions, he wants to get this over with and is uncomfortable with all the uncertainty.

You probably know this, but it appears the Blazers' biggest competition in this race for his services are Chicago and San Antonio. The Bulls are going hard at Ben Wallace, and hopefully they're successful in that quest. That'll take them out of the Joel equation. The Spurs are interested, but can't offer quite as much as Portland can. Still, the prospect of playing next to Tim Duncan has to be bouncing around in Joel's mind. He is also very excited about what Portland did in the draft, and I know for a fact he wouldn't at all mind a return to the Blazers. His agent, Bill Duffy, has been quoted as saying just that in the last couple of days, which I find a bit interesting. They're just preparing for anything at this point, and that's actually a positive sign for us.

Now, for a quick Wheels report from Sunday in Lake Tahoe.

"It was another beautiful day in Tahoe, and the Trail Blazers went through two practices. They'll do that again tomorrow. The only guys still missing are LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy. They still haven't signed their contracts yet, but that should be taken care of by tomorrow hopefully, and then they can get here and begin working out with the rest of the team. There are just some little details that need to be worked out, and this isn't unusual.

Joel Freeland, the other first-round pick, is here, and took part in the workouts today. I talked to him about playing in the NBA next season versus another season back in Europe. Freeland told me he definitely wants to stay in the states, even if that means a trip to the developmental league.

During our break between workouts today, Bill Harrah, the owner of the Harrah's casino chain, took some members of the Blazers travelling party out on Lake Tahoe on his boat. I was fortunate enough to be included on the cruise.

I'll be at both practices again tomorrow and will have much more for you following those workouts."

I can't believe what you answer to Ragmon in the previous blog. Sergio it's not expected to play here next season??? It can't be true!!!!! Sergio it's nowadays better than Dickau, Jack or Blake with no discussion. I can't understand why the north americans despreciate european players. Jack and Blake are mid-low level point guards and don't expect Dickau to be better than Telfair. It's unbelivable that the Blazers close the door to his best point guard of the roster, and knowing (I'm starting to think that you don't know) that he has enough potential to be one of the ten best point guards in the league in two or three years. That's incredible!!!!!!

Thanks for the comment. I want to stress that we don't really know whether Sergio will be signed and playing for the Trail Blazers next season. To my knowledge, this hasn't been ruled out. You obviously have great respect for his game, and the Trail Blazers do as well, or they wouldn't have drafted him in the first round. In fact, they made the trade with Phoenix simply because they were so impressed with Sergio. You haven't heard us discussing him as much because he's not going to summer league with the rest of the draft picks. As you know, he's staying to play with his national team, which was the right thing to do. I'm researching this situation further, and will let you know what I find out. I will get an official answer for you. Once again, our scouts love Sergio and that's why they sacrificed so much to get him. Don't forget that. It's an incredible compliment to him that he was selected in the first round of the draft.

I said I'd get you an answer to the Sergio questions, but I didn't think I'd get it this quickly. You'll be happy to know that Sergio Rodriguez IS going to come to the NBA next season. He's going sign with the Trail Blazers on Wednesday, and is even going to be at Summer League in Las Vegas for at least one afternoon. He isn't going to play. He will return to Europe on the 10th and then will play with his national team in the World Championships in Japan. He will then return to Portland and get ready for training camp with the Blazers. I'll have more details in tomorrow's blog, I just wanted to get you this breaking news.

I really hope Joel will stay with the Blazers, with Portland's awesome draft, this is how I see the Blazers starting line up. C. Joel Przybilla, PF. Lamarcus Aldridge, SF. Martell Webster, SG. Brandon Roy, PG Jaret Jack.

Joel will be very important in that line up, and this line up will be a power house soon, and very positive.

also I know Sergio will be great for the Blazers as well and freeland.

Can't wait for the season to see how the summer league works out, and the season to start

I, for one applaud the Blazers' efforts on draft day. It seems like most of the national media feels the same. I think it's tough to listen to the local sports radio trashing on the the execs for the moves that were made. They had the big "draft the Stache" campaign and now that the team has gone in another direction, they comment on how Steve Patterson and Kevin Pritchard will get fired for taking SUCH A CHANCE on Aldridge and passing up on Morrison. Nearly every moch draft I read had Aldrige rated number ONE or two and Morrison rated anywhere from 3 to 5. I really thought Morrison would have been fun to root for, but unlike the boys on the radio, I know that fans pulling for Adam Morrison is nice, but if the team wins 25-30 games again this year, the seats at the Rose Garden will remain empty. The ONLY way to put fans back in the seats is to JUST WIN BABY!!! Hopefully, the team can do that with an exiting, uptempo brand of basketball. SO, to Mr. Patterson and Mr. Pritchard -stay the course. Sign quality people with good attitudes and work ethics and no matter what it takes, get rid of Randolph and Miles!!!!! Don't bring in any more thugs, gangstas, losers, or mercenaries! Mike V

So who is Portland's PG?
The cluster at the one spot was a major burden last season. Bring in Sergio and we'll have 4. No way. So who's leading? I'm torn on the subject. Jack is capable, and he deserves it, but so does Blake. Dickau My home town boy from vancouver has showed he's capable. Then there's Sergio. I knew nothing of "spanish chocolate" before we drafted him at twenty seven. From everything I've read since from people like aitor14vn, He's gods gift to assists, and we should feel honored to have him. I'm intriuged. If Paul Allen will shell out four million dollars to Phoenix for him he must be good. We've never known Mr. Allen to throw away money on potential have we?

Mike- Will you keep us up to date with how certain players are doing in workouts? I want to know if Outlaw & HA have improved at ALL. How do Roy & Aldridge look playing with Webster? Does Freeland have any chance of being on the team this year (skill wise)? Thanks for your work!

on draft night i found video of sergio and he can definitely handle the ball and pass. he seems to be a pass-first floor-leader type but he made a 3 with nice form. so we'll see.

The point guard situation that we have we can't have at the beginning of the season. It will really mess with the chemistry. I think we need to package Dickau in either a miles or randolph deal because he's cheap, and if need be, start out with Sergio in the developmental league. After that, I really think that Jack should start over blake, as he plays very well with Martell. Thanks for the update, but please some player reports. Especially on Martell, Travis and the 3 rooks.

Thanks a lot

Mike,

So what do these rookies pack? They show up at the draft, then have to fly to a team and then on to summer camp. it must be a total wohirlwind for them. I can't imagine what they show up in NY with.

Wheels' Lake Tahoe Report
posted: 7/1/2006 at 10:22 PM

As I've talked about a lot in recent days, we're going to have summer league covered like a blanket, and you'll be getting a lot of information on this web site, and on this blog. We'll keep you informed of everything, give you highlights, photos, interviews and more. For the first time, that I'm aware of, the Trail Blazers summer league team is actually having a mini training camp, just to get ready for Las Vegas. Friday evening some of the team arrived in Lake Tahoe to begin preparations for the summer league. The entire Blazers Broadcasting team will be in Las Vegas, but Brian Wheeler got a jump on us all by heading with the team to Lake Tahoe for this weekend's practices.

This is the the first report from Wheels. Tomorrow's will be a little meatier, as all of the players will have had a chance to go through the two-a-day practices on Saturday.

Brian Wheeler's report from Lake Tahoe:

"We arrived yesterday in Tahoe, and I can tell you it's a heck of a lot cooler here than what we'll be facing next week in Las Vegas. But, this is a great opportunity for the summer league team to get prepared. They are getting a taste of what an NBA training camp will be like, that's for sure. The coaching staff is putting the summer league team through two practices a day.

Nate McMillan had stayed back with the first-round picks, LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy, and Joel Freeland, in Portland, and they got in last night at about 10. It's the same situation with Nikoloz Tskitishvili, and he'll go through practice with the team for the first time today.

The summer league team is going to be coached jointly by assistant coaches Dean Demopolous and Monty Williams. From the way I understand it, Dean will coach the first three games and Monty the last two. They both took charge in the first practices yesterday, and both had plenty to say.

Blazers president Steve Patterson is here with us as well. There is some legal stuff that had to be taken care of with the draft picks before they could practice. Some people forget that they actually have to sign following the draft. With the rookie-scale system, there isn't much to this, and all should be available for practice today. They flew into Reno last night, and then made the hour drive to Tahoe.

So, obviously, not everybody was on hand at the first practice yesterday. They went through some basic drills in the first practice, which was about two hours. In the second practice, they went through some plays and sets, and will probably have to go over all of that again, because the new guys will be there today.

I asked Patterson about the great event on Friday that introduced the new players to the city, and he was pleased with how everything went. The players also said it was a great event and were excited to be introduced to the city, meet the media, and the kids

We'll be filling you in the rest of this roster, but as you probably know, Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Ha Seung-Jin, and Nedzad Sinonovic, are back again for summer league. Martell looks like he is in better shape than everyone, and was clearly the best player on the floor on the first day. He was easily outrunning everyone in the five-on-five drills. He looks very impressive, and looks like he has gained some weight and strength.

We're practicing at a community center in Tahoe, and it is equipped with a weight room. Strength coach Bob Medina is already getting guys hitting the weights, getting set for Vegas. The practices today are set for 10am to noon, and then again from 6pm to 8. I'll be at both practices tomorrow and will have much more to say about the new guys, as they'll get their first action as Trail Blazers."

You mentioned how fit Martell looks. Last year he was said to become a 2 guard. But with Roy, and martell's increased strength, will he be the 3. If so, who are the blazers trying to get as the PF? And what about center, is aldridge going to start from the getgo?

Nice report, Wheels. Looking forward to reading your take on the summer league in the coming weeks. Very nice to hear Martell has been keeping himself busy in the gym, and in the weight room. Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot Wheels and Mike, I look forward to the more in-depth report tonight. I'm very excited to hear that Martell looks solid and I hope that him, Travis, and the new rookies just dominate the summer league as well as the other players at practice. It'd be great if you could give lots of info on how Martell, Travis, Brandon and Lamarcus play throughout these practices and the Summer league. Thanks alot- From a very loyal Blazer fan.

Great report. Thanks, Wheels.

No surprise that Martell is the best player in the camp. He's going to be an amazing player. I hope Travis is coming along, too. Is he still under contract with the Blazers? I thought it ran out at the end of the season, but maybe he signed a extension I didn't know about. I hate to be so negative here, but I don't think Ha is a basketball player. I really don't know what the Blazers see in him. From what I've seen, he has a 7'3" body and some mobility, but horrible skills and decision making. His drawbacks are much bigger than his worth IMO.

I'm also not expecting much from Sinonovic or Tskitishvili. I didn't even know that Blazers were still looking into Sinonovic. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Go Blazers!

ramgon: I don't think Sergio is expected to play in the States this year. If he wasn't mentioned on the site, that may be why.

Great work wheels. I would like to see this posted daily on the new things going on in portland. I liked the draft, some are mad about morrison but I think aldridge had much more long term upside, especially if we do resign Joel and trade zach for a good point gaurd. I see roy or martel being interchangeable at SG and SF and, while I don't see them winning a lot this year (smell Greg Oden?), I do expect to see them progress into a very solid team over time (think this decades bulls). Please keep us up to date on stats, information and overall commentary about the progress you see and what our newer players do and display.
