Training Camp Roster Changes
posted: 9/28/2006 at 9:52 PM

It's all about timing in professional sports, and unfortunately for Portland-native Aaron Miles, this was very bad time to be nursing a mid-ankle sprain. The Trail Blazers announced on Thursday that Miles failed his physical, due to the ankle, and will not be invited to training camp. The first day of camp is Tuesday, and it will be held at the team's practice facility in Tualatin.

The team has been looking for another point guard to sign to a non-guaranteed contract, and Miles looked to have that job, even if it was just a temporary one, sewn up. It's a bad break for the former Jefferson High School and Kansas star, who played 19 games for the Golden State Warriors last season.

The Blazers haven't yet announced if there will be a 15th player invited to camp, but there will most likely be an invitation handed out on Friday. In this case, one man's loss is another man's opportunity, and we'll know very shortly who will be getting that coveted opportunity. There are only 13 players on the roster with guaranteed contracts, so obviously, the invite carries with it the opportunity to make the opening day roster.

The team has added another big man to the training camp roster. Veteran Zendon Hamilton (pictured above), who has seen time with six different NBA teams over the past six seasons, has been signed to a non-guaranteed contract. He's a load at 6-11 and almost 260 pounds, and adds another tough, physical inside player to the roster.

"He's an experienced, hard worker who will help push our big guys during camp," says Blazers player personnel director Kevin Pritchard. "A couple of our assistant coaches have spent time with Zendon in the past, and felt very comfortable bringing him in."

Even though the roster looks overloaded in the frontcourt, an injury to LaMarcus Aldridge, and a recent mild calf strain to Raef LaFrentz, left the staff concerned about the middle heading into what promises to be a difficult, physical training camp. Hamilton's signing helps fill that need.

The practice facility was relatively quiet on Thursday, as coach Nate McMillan advised his players to take a couple of days off and rest up in preparation for camp. Hard workouts and pick-up games have been a daily occurance at the facility for the past few weeks. Several players, including Joel Przybilla, Jarrett Jack, Martell Webster, and Travis Outlaw, still snuck in light workouts, even as McMillan was chasing them out.

Outlaw, who has been very impressive during the past several weeks, is heading into what will be a very important season for him. The starting small forward spot is very much open, and don't think Travis doesn't realize that. Each season during training camp, Nate McMillan demands that his players pass a conditioning test, that involves timed, full-court sprints. It is not easy, and many players fail it several times before earning a passing grade. Outlaw, who failed the test four-straight times during last year's camp, has reportedly already passed it with flying colors heading into this year's camp. It's been said he's in, by far, the best physical shape of his career.

On the final day of full-court pick-up games, by the way, which was Wednesday, the dominant player on the floor appeared to be Zach Randolph. As I've discussed many times during the past several weeks, players' individual win-loss records in these games are kept on a large board at the end of the court. Wednesday, Randolph went 5 and 1, and single-handedly raised the level and intensity of the play on the court. It's also been said, he's in the best shape of his career heading into camp.

Well, sad to see A-Miles won't be playing for us. But do we think we could use Zendon Hamilton? Maybe, maybe, maybe. We have as I am sure many comments will say, already 3 primary big men. I don't think I have to name em off. We could use him in camp, but not the season I don't think. Good to know our already-Trail Blazers are excelling. I have a feeling too that this will not be a dissapointing season like last year.

Too bad about Miles, did he sprain his ankle in a pickup game at the PF? If so, when, and how?

I haven't the faintest idea why, but seeing the laundry baskets in the picture of Zendon Hamilton really struck me as funny.

How long ago did Raef's "recent mild calf strain" occur, and how severely is it expected to impact his ability to fully participate in training camp?

MIke, i didn't realize you were so big on Outlaw. It's good to hear he's in shape. I have to say i'm surprised to hear Travis had problems with conditioning, last year. That seems like one area you really can't make excuses for without an injury. I can see why Nate was hard on him at the beginning of last season. Out of shape and slow to pick up the offense isn't a good combination for a player whose hunger for PT and opportunity should make them willing to do whatever it takes. The difference in Outlaw's condition, this year's versus last year's, is another example of Nate getting players to buy into his program. The ground work he laid down last year has gone a long way in changing the "culture" of the team.

I echo the hyper bully's questions about Raef's injury. What's up with that, Mike?

I can't believe a professional ATHLETE would fail a conditioning test. Come on, Travis! You get paid millions to play a game, yet you come to camp out of shape. Disgraceful! I would run miles everyday if they would give me such huge dollars to play a GAME.

Aldridge Pounding Away
posted: 9/27/2006 at 8:33 PM

As the players continue to prepare, on-the-court, for training camp, which is less than a week away now, there is a player in the Trail Blazers' weight room who is chomping at the bit to get back on the floor. Rookie LaMarcus Aldridge, the second-overall pick in June's NBA Draft, is battling back from shoulder surgery, and is making tremendous strides.

We've talked so much about the players who are participating in these daily pick-up games at the team's facility, I thought it was time to update the progress of Aldridge. As we watch the great scrimmages going on, Aldridge can usually be seen through a large window, where he positions himself many times to be able to workout, and watch his new teammates play. He'll occasionally walk out to the court and take a seat, and maybe watch a game, but then heads right back into the sweat shop to continue his work.

Soon after he underwent surgery in Los Angeles, the team's doctors set a time table for his return to full-contact play. These are usually conservative estimates, and the original thought was that Aldridge could be back by mid to late November. I reminded him of that estimate on Wednesday after he had finished his ab workout.

"I'm definitely ahead of schedule," Aldridge told me. "I'm feeling great, and it's killing me not to be able to out on the floor running with my guys. But, I know what I have to do."

It was only a couple of weeks ago that LaMarcus couldn't lift his right arm over his head, because of the surgically-repaired shoulder. As I was asking for an update, he demonstrated his current range of motion.

"A week ago I couldn't even do this," Aldridge said, as he stuck his long arm into the air. "I can't tell you how far this thing has come in the last few days. It was getting a little frustrating, not being able to do much with my shoulder. Now, I'm fired up because I'm seeing some big-time progress," he continued, while raising his arm up and down.

Not being able to participate in the action on the floor has had it's positive aspects for Aldridge. He's been able to concentrate on working the rest of his body, particularly his lower body. His rehab sessions with trainer Jay Jensen, and daily workouts with strength coach Bobby Medina have been extremely valuable.

"We've looked at this as an opportunity to really work on LaMarcus' lower body, and his core," says Medina. "He's been running now, and he's been rehabbing in the pool a lot. I'm not worried at all about his upper body. That will come. There are so many games, once the season begins, that we don't have much of a chance to really do leg work with the players. We've really wanted to get him a great base, and work on flexibility."

Once again, when asked about Aldridge's attitude, the Blazer staff lights up.

"He's so coachable, and does anything we ask of him," says Medina. "He's focused on turning this into a positive, and I think he's done that. LaMarcus is so great because he totally buys in to everything we try and get him to do. He's made great progress and can't wait to get back on the floor."

I'm excited for March when Aldridge will be getting some minutes. One thing i noticed about him in summer league, he doesn't mind passing out of the double team for open shots, at all. I wasn't aware that peticular part of his game was as developed as it seemed. I wish he would pass that unselfishness on to Randolph.....pardon the pun. He wasn't out there trying to draw attention to himself. He was just out there playing. It was refreshing.

Aaron Miles Invited to Camp
posted: 9/26/2006 at 9:44 PM

Portland native Aaron Miles has received a formal invitation to join the Trail Blazers at training camp, which begins in less than a week. Miles, who starred at Portland's Jefferson High School, went on to have a very successful college career at Kansas University. He played 19 games for the Golden State Warriors last season, before being waived on January 5th.

"He's a young, improving player and we are happy to give him a chance to make our regular-season roster," says Blazers player personnel director Kevin Pritchard. "We've brought in another solid individual, and good person, and I think Aaron has the potential to stick in this league."

The signing of Miles, to a non-guaranteed contract, brings the total number of players on the roster to 14. There will be a 15th player invited to camp, and we should have information on who that will be in the next couple of days.

Miles left Kansas as the Big-12 Conference's all-time assists leader, and sits eighth on the NCAA's all-time list. He was also known as a hard-nosed defensive player with the Jayhawks, and was named to the Big-12's all-defensive team his last three years in college.

"Miles won a lot in college, and we like that," says Pritchard. "He knows how to play and plays the right way. He'll definitely push guys in camp. He's busted his tail getting better, and now he has a chance to be part of our organization. I've seen him a lot, and have seen him really improve his game. The biggest thing to me is, he makes players around him better, and we're always looking for that."

Miles joins fellow Kansas alum Raef LaFrentz on the Blazers roster. Pritchard, of course, led Kansas to a national championship in 1988. Another former Jayhawk, Darnell Valentine, is the team's director of player programs. Pritchard laughed at the notion that people are starting to think of his team as the Portland Jayhawks.

The Blazers continued with their pre-training camp workouts on Tuesday, and the pick-up games were as spirited as ever. The one player who is showing the most improvement, in my opinion, is Travis Outlaw. Something has seemed to click with Travis in the past couple of weeks, and he's as aggressive on the floor as I've seen him. It also appears the work he's put in on his outside shot is paying off, as he was stroking the mid-range jumper during the pick-up games. The play of the day involved Outlaw, but actually went against him. In one of the final games of the day, he attempted to finish a fast break with a high-flying jam. He cocked the ball back with one arm, but was then met at the rim by Joel Przybilla, who impressively capped the dunk attempt. Outside of that, it was probably Travis' best day yet.

He is not a big man; he is a point guard, and i think it would be great if he made the team. Very hardworking defender who is developing an offensive game. Plus he is from P-town, sound like a good plan to me. But i think it is unlikely he will beat out dickau and or sergio, we will see.

Good to know about potential players. Especially if they're from Rip City. (Or Portland, whichever...) When I saw him (Miles) play I was unable to be anything but amazed at his skills on the floor. I think he definitely could be a use to the team.
Speaking of Miles, MB, what's happening with Darius?
Anyway... Travis, glad to see yer doin better ev'ry week! He has plenty of time to shake that block off and become the sensation he was to the guys who drafted him for us.
Aaron, we can't wait to see ya in action this season.

I think Miles has a chance in the league, if not with us, somewhere else. Egoless role players dedicated to defense and making players around them better are a nice draw to most coaches and executives.
Pritchard is an unbelieveable evaluator of talent. If i had my choice as to who to keep in the Blazer family (players included), only Paul Allen as an owner would trump KP as an executive.....sorry, Mike. I'm absolutely confident his choices will have a winning record, which will make our "unbelievably pro-active" approach very successful.

Joel, Raef, Sergio on Courtside
posted: 9/25/2006 at 10:30 PM

It was a first for Trail Blazers' rookie Sergio Rodriguez, in this time of many firsts for him. He is still learning the English language, and therefore was a little nervous about coming on our radio show, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss.

But, we told Sergio that he did great, and that his language skills had improved dramatically since we first talked to him at the Las Vegas Summer League in July. I had a chance to do a quick TV interview with him in Vegas, and I could tell that he was very uncomfortable with a one-on-one interview at that point. He's come a long way since then. He's also helped lead Spain to a World Basketball Championship since then, so he's obviously made strides on the court as well.

We addressed his play for his national team, and his impressive play so far with his new teammates in Portland. Monday morning I watched him have probably his best session so far in playing pick-up games with the other Blazers. Sergio's first NBA training camp is now just days away.

We also addressed the culture shock Sergio must be going through, as a young man in a brand-new country, looking to make the leap to the big stage and bright lights of the NBA. He's handling it very well, but says he also knows he faces some big hurdles. There will certainly be times when he'll be longing for his home in the Canary Islands. Christopher Columbus made a stop in the Canary Islands on his way to discover the new world, and Sergio probably knows, at least a little now, how Chris was feeling.

To listen to the entire interview with Sergio, click here.

We also took a trip into the Trail Blazers frontcourt during the show. Joel Przybilla, who received a standing ovation at Sunday's Family Reunion event, joined us at the top of the show. Joel talked about how he's down to a weight of 237 pounds, and how he feels that has a lot to do with why his knees are feeling so healthy.

To listen to the interview with Przybilla, click here.

Helping Przybilla in the middle this season will be Raef LaFrentz, who, like Joel, has purchased a home very near the Blazers practice facility. LaFrentz has loved what he has seen of his new team so far, and is fired up for the start of training camp. LaFrentz was so excited about his trade to Portland, he made the trip to the Vegas Summer League just to get a look at some of his new teammates. He's been in Portland for the past month and a-half, getting set for the season. LaFrentz also talks about his past with Przybilla. Raef was the host on a recruiting trip Joel took to Kansas, when he was deciding where to play his college ball. LaFrentz says he quickly realized that Przybilla had already decided to stay close to home and attend the University of Minnesota.

To listen to the LaFrentz interview, click here.

I mentioned this during the show last night, and we'll be talking much more about this in the coming days, but a big change is in store for our radio program. On October 26th, the show moves to its new day, Thursday. This is something we've thought about doing for a long time, and it's finally happening. Years ago, when the show started, Monday was the light night for NBA games. Now, Thursday has the fewest games during the regular season. In an attempt to keep the show on a more consistent night during the season, we're moving it to Thursday. We'll have many more reminders in the near future, we just wanted to get the announcement made early. Enjoy the interviews.

I was impressed with Sergio as his English has improved and I could tell that he has a quick mind with already a good understanding. Spanish food is very good as I have tried to cook several dishes since we drafted him. there is a place in cornelius that is a mexican supermarket but thats a bit far to go for him. :P

Raef seems to be excited vs earlier when he seemed annoyed to be a blazer. I hope Jamaal does feel a little better too but to me it seems that he doesnt want to be a blazer and will just go threw the motions.

Hi Mike. That is great. As a supporter of Sergio I think it can be important for a young player like him to get the appropriate atmosphere in the team. He is very young and you should "take care" of him in this changing period of his life. I see you are doing it quite enthusiastically.

What I have noticed about Sergio's attitude as player is that basketball is a passion for him, rather than a proffession. And that is wonderful, and helps to explain his "magic" on the court.

By the way, this year's roster seems very attractive. Can't wait to see the first matches.

Last three years I had the chance to see Sergio Rodriguez play here, at Estudiantes Club from Madrid.

First time I saw him I felt something that no other player I have saw before. Each time Sergio takes the ball, al the people in the Arena rise up their heads, waiting for something Sergio to do...

I know Sergio have a long way to improve himself to become a great NBA guard, and as well, a great NBA player. He have to improve his defense, his shooting... but he has "magic" when he takes the ball and begins to bounce.

I am a lucky guy, becouse I know Sergio personally. He is a very shy guy, and I know he is improving about the language and defense and shooting...

You, Portland fans are so lucky to have Sergio on your team that I coudn't express. Take care of him, and be sure he will be the reason this season you will rise up from your seat, when the "magic" come to your Arena.

My apologizes about my writting english, it was a long time since i didn't write anything...

Courtside Lineup Update
posted: 9/24/2006 at 10:39 PM

Earlier I gave you a tentative lineup for our radio show tonight, Courtside Monday Night, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, and here's an update.

Joining us at 6:15 will be Joel Przybilla. At 6:30, we'll have Raef LaFrentz on the show. And, at 7:00, we'll be joined, in studio, by Sergio Rodriguez. The show begins at 6pm on KXL-750 AM in the Portland area, and can also be heard live on line by clicking on the link on the top right portion of this page. If you miss any of the interviews, check back later tonight, or tomorrow, as all of them will be posted.

Now, to the events of Sunday afternoon. I'm having a hard time figuring out what the lasting image of the afternoon will be. But, I think it's probably captured best by the photo you see above. NBA players, as you know, aren't even required to report until the first week of October, but yesterday nine Blazers were on hand for a big event at Open Meadow High School in North Portland. When I heard we were doing this, and that players were invited, I figured we might get a couple to turn out and shake a few hands. But, I honestly wasn't expecting the turnout we had. It's one thing that there are this many players even in town, and it's another that they would all give up their Sunday afternoons to attend an event like this.

Well over 700 Trail Blazer season ticket holders, sponsors, and ex-season ticket holders came to the event. It was billed a "Family Reunion," and the events were patterned after that American tradition. There was bingo, a water balloon toss, tug o' war, and things of that nature. Coach Nate McMillan spoke, and the players mingled with the fans, took pictures, and signed autographs. There was even a game of "Nate Says." It was just Simon Says, with Nate acting as Simon. Believe it or not, my TV partner, Mike Rice took home the gold in that competition, edging Jarrett Jack and Brandon Roy. So much for Rice having problems with authority.

Forget the common notion that big men in the NBA don't have good hands, too. Joel Przybilla, and a fan, pulled the upset and won the water balloon toss. Travis Outlaw gave it his best in the pie eating contest, but came up short. He blamed Martell Webster, who snuck up behind the table and jammed Travis' face into the pie as the event was coming down to the wire.

Coach McMillan, who loves to get his hands on a microphone, took the time to introduce all of the players in attendance, and said a few words about each. I've mentioned a few of the players who were there. Also on hand Sunday were LaMarcus Aldridge, Dan Dickau, Raef LaFrentz, and Sergio Rodriguez. I took a few minutes to talk a little Ryder Cup with Rodriguez, and told him that the other Sergio, being Sergio Garcia, did Spain proud with his play in Ireland. We'll hear much more from Sergio tonight on the radio show. Talk to you then.

I couldn't have had more fun at this event. It was a privledge to be around all the players.
Being a season ticket holder, we arrived at the park and shook hands with all the Blazers in attentdence. I was shocked.
It seemed like the whole team enjoyed themselves, but of course, there were a few yawns from the players.
They seemed to have had a great time. Dan Dickau was getting accousted by his teammates father in the balloon toss. Dickau just kept his cool and laughed it off.
These players are class acts. The only players not in attendence were Randolph, Miles, Dixon, and Magloire.
We hoped to meet the newest Blazer, but seeing 9 of 13 players and participating in an event with JJack, Mike Rice, Brandon Roy, and Raef Lafrenz will be a memory that I'll keep forever.
I love these new Blazers. Now lets see what we can do about getting some of the less classy guys off the team.

Hi Mike,
Thanks again for all the good bloggin'. I'm writing to air some frustration I have with the Blazers organization and wasn't sure where else to air it. First and foremost, I'm frustrated with the Oregonian and how they cover the Blazers. I have tried to share my thoughts with them many times over the years, and those I've been able to communicate with justify what they write by saying basically "I call em' like I see em'". They feel they are remaining objective as journalists and think I'm just a "homer" (which I am), and they don't want to be a "homer" sports page. While I can understand their argument, it really seems to me that they are antagonistic toward the Blazers in general and especially towards specific players. The coverage does not seem objective at all. Now, I understand that the Blazers can't really control the Oregonian coverage, but it seems like they could do a lot better job of standing up for their players when appropriate. I think there are many examples of when this could have happened. Most recently I think this should be going on with the situation that Zach Randolph is in. I think 99 percent of Portland citizens would agree that if Zach made another human do something sexually that they did not consent to, it would be wrong and he should be punished, but everything that has been in the news is nothing but allegations. The police found no proof! Zach has been raked over the coals publicly. What the Oregonian has chosen to publish seems irresponible, maybe unethical, and certainly in line with their antagonistic spin. I think the Blazers need to find a way to publically stand up for him. The Oregonian has a major impact over the way the public sees the Blazers. The Blazers need to do more to also influence what the people think of the team. They also just need to get behind players when needed. Anyway, thats my opinion, thanks for taking a moment to read.....Peace

Great blog, Mike. It's the kind of blog that connects us fans that normally would never hear anything about this with the good things done by those in the Blazer family as an organization and as players. Now that i am a father (my daughter just turned two), i have to say in the coming years the most important thing the Blazer organization can do to keep me loyal is put together a team for which i can put my hands together and cheer. A team for which i can encourage my little girl to do so, as well. These kinds of events having high attaindance from the players goes a long way in making us proud of being Blazer fans.

Even though he's no longer on the roster, Steve Blake is very much a part of the Trail Blazers' family. He and his wife, Kristen, have adopted Portland as their new hometown, and will been returning to their home here after the upcoming NBA season. Friday afternoon the season got off to a very special start for their family.

At 4:34 pm on Friday, Kristen gave birth to their first child, Nicholas Hanson. He weighed in at 7 pounds 8 ounces, and was 22 and a-half inches long. Everything went as planned, and Friday night Nicholas was resting comfortably with his parents.

The Blake's were happy to be able to share this news first with Blazernation, and even though mom wasn't quite ready to be in a photo on this blog, I was able to get a shot of Steve and his son. They have made so many special friends in Portland, and were happy they were able to give birth here, before the start of the season. Steve has been working out at the Trail Blazers' practice facility, and in two weeks will report to the Milwaukee Bucks. A short time later, Kristen and Nicholas will move back and join him.

Congratulations to Steve and Kristen on this very special weekend.

Great news! It's too bad Steve had to get traded, I know it had nothing to do with his work ethic or his play on the court, it had more to do with his contract. Hopefully we can nab him as a free agent next year. Congrats to the Blake family and I wish nothing but the best for you in your upcoming year for the Bucks!

Steve, Congratulations, to you and your wife. He's going to have a great basketball mind and plenty of ball handling skills. Enjoy the blessing of your son and I'm looking forward to you getting down on the court as well as tutoring Sergio and making him as good as you are.....

Portland, It's going to be a fun year here and this is just the beginning.

Congrats to the Blakes. Tell the young boy he's got some handles in his blood. Wish you were here in Portland to teach Sergio but I think he's got more than enough teachers out here.

Go Blazers!!!!

Congratulations Steve,
I remember when my wife had our son he was born a couple weeks after I got back from Iraq, and also on My birthday, November 5th 2004. It was a miracle, this is going to be the best time of your life, enjoy it, and hopefully we see you back here in a Blazers uniform after this season. You are one of the greatest people that I have never known, except for what I have seen on and off the floor. Thanks for being an upstanding person, and the kind we need here in Portland.

Dixon Working Overtime
posted: 9/21/2006 at 9:38 PM

Thursday night our company held its annual picnic out at the Trail Blazers' practice facility in Tualatin. This has been held at various sights during the past few years, and they always do a great job with the events. Having it at the team's practice site was a great decision, and with the two basketball courts, shooting hoops was an option for staff members. However, one of the hoops was occupied the entire time, and no one was about to ask this gentleman to leave.

Juan Dixon, who I've talked about several times in the past couple of weeks, was back at the facility for his evening workout. He had played in the morning pick-up games, and now was back to shoot jumper after jumper. So, while people mingled around him, ate barbeque, listened to music, and conversed, Juan continued to work. There's an automatic rebounding machine that fires passes out to the perimeter, so that players can work alone. Juan wore this thing out last night. The machine not only rebounds and passes, it counts your makes and misses, and even gives you your shooting percentage. During the time I was watching Dixon he was 46 for 50 from the top of the key area(see photo). He didn't even seem to notice the people around him.

A couple of days ago I talked about Dixon's off-season workout program, and passed along how good he has looked in the pick-up games. He's heading into his second season as a Trail Blazer, and has worked as hard as anyone, according to those who are at the practice facility all the time. The players, by the way, have access to the facility 24-hours a day, and it's not uncommon to hear of guys pounding away late into the night. It just so happened, Dixon's evening workout on this night was on display for the staff to see.

I had a proud moment during the evening's activities. I was the first to fire a fastball on the money and knock Blazers director of player personnel Kevin Pritchard into the icy water of the dunk tank. Art Sasse, our CMO, fell victim to a Barrett slider moments later. By the time president Steve Patterson took his turn on the dunk-tank chair, I was icing my arm, and let someone else have the glory. I must say I wasn't the only one to send Pritchard to a chilly bath. Head coach Nate McMillan purchased several throws (with the money going to charity) and probably downed Pritchard at least five times. There you go, behind-the-scenes info you just can't get anywhere else.

Now to some quick news of the morning workout. I've informally been giving you my "star of the day" during the pick-up games. It's just been my opinion of who's looking really good on a particular day. Thursday morning I asked several of the participants who they thought had the best session. The consensus was Sergio Rodriguez. Trail Blazers' coaches, who have worked with Sergio in individual drills, have been very impressed.

Obviously, the rookies have returned from New York, where they were involved in the NBA's five-day rookie orientation. After the morning games ended I talked to Brandon Roy about the experience. He said the toughest part of the seminar was its length. Not that the subject matter wasn't important, but there just wasn't time for any of these guys to get a workout in. I told Brandon that I'd heard the sessions were from 9am until 9pm.

"We started at 8:30, and went until 10 o'clock at night," Roy said. "Some guys would try and go hop on an exercise bike at the hotel when we got back, just to try and get some cardio work in. But, it was just tough. I was dying not being able to play at all. Now that I'm back, I'm going to be in here twice a day until training camp begins."

Roy did say the rookie orientation was very well done, and very informative.

"They talked to us about what to expect, how to handle money, how to deal with outside influences, everything," said Roy. "They covered things you would never even think about. They had referees talk to us, union reps, judges who have had various cases involving players, former players, and league executives. I know it's been called the most-detailed, best-designed program of its kind, and now I see why."

Speaking of Roy, I mentioned earlier this week that insidehoops.com was getting set to publish an interview with Brandon. That's now up on their site. Click here to for the link to that.

"...held at various sites..." not "...held at various sights..."

Good stuff on Juan, do you know if he works this hard every season, or do you think he's kicked it up a notch because he's hearing footsteps?

How (and when and where) was Martell's off-season workout? Did he work out with Kobe, and/or Kobe's trainer?

Is Darius in town yet? If so, how does he look? If not, when is he expected to report? Any word from anyone who played against him or watched him play in pickup games in Chicago?

THB, maybe 'sights' is meant as a pun. as in the view was grand at the places that the events were being held at.

maybe they were held at Council Crest, or Ecola Park..or something.

Outlaw a Power Forward?
posted: 9/20/2006 at 10:32 PM

It is certainly not his natural position, but if it'll help his team, and get him playing time, Travis Outlaw says he'll be more than happy to slide into the power forward position for the Trail Blazers from time to time.

"I'm feeling more comfortable all the time, and am finding out new things about my game and my potential," Outlaw told me on Wednesday at the Trail Blazers' practice facility in Tualatin. "If I would have gone to college I'd just be heading into my senior season, so I know I'm still pretty young in this process."

During the pick-up games on Wednesday, Outlaw did end up guarding Joel Przybilla a lot of the time, and also spent time on perimeter players. Travis, who turned 22 years old on Monday, looks to be carrying himself with a greater confidence heading into camp, and appears to be getting a better feel for his game.

"This will be a big season for me," Outlaw says. "I'm just trying to improve my outside shot, put on weight, and get into the best shape I can heading into training camp."

Outlaw has the size, and more importantly, the length, to defend bigger players. We've always talked about his athleticism, and that's never been a question. And, it appears, at least in these informal games, that his jump shot is greatly improved. But, is he really capable of playing effectively at the four?

"He's going to have to be," says Blazers assistant coach Monty Williams. "I would love to see Travis develop into an assassin that we bring off the bench to kick up the pace of play. He runs like a deer, and you all know how he can finish in the open floor. We just want to use his athletic ability, and if that's at the power forward spot, so be it."

Outlaw was taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2003 draft, and is heading into his fourth NBA season. Last season with the Blazers he averaged 6 points in 17 minutes per game. He's hoping both of those numbers go up this season. Where he sits on the team's depth chart heading into camp is unknown, but he says go ahead and pencil him into the power forward and small forward positions.

"The days of the Charles Oakley-type power forwards are gone," says Williams. "Travis can absolutely play bigger, and have an increased role, but that's up to him. I can think of several teams in the west who would love to have a player like Travis flying up and down the court from the four spot, doing what he does best."

We certainly do need someone to guard Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom and Boris Diaw. The way Tim Thomas and Vlad Radmanovic were snatched up the lighter, better perimater shooting 4's will need Travis to run with them. It seems key that Travis can be aggressive and hit the outside shot well.

Outlaw may be a little lithe to survive over extended periods of time at the PF position but because of the necessary need to be active, physical gifted and passionate enough to carsh the glass, he will thrive. In actuality, his ball skills may be to weak to stay at the 3 maybe facilitating a permanent position change as well as mindset change to the 4 position. Agreed?

Let's go Blazers.....I'm rooting for you all the way from VA.

We currently have 5 players (who are expecting time) and about 42 million devoted to the 4 and 5 spots. I'm not sure what the motive is here, but i'm reasonably sure that talk of Outlaw at PF is just smoke. However, i suppose they could be talking about after the trade deadline when Zach and one of the other four are gone. To be honest, i was hoping Travis would be somewhere else by that time, too.

BTW, Mike, there has been a link to Nate's interview with Quick on the home page for days now that isn't there. I decided i would tell you on trailblazer.com.

Hey Barrett, why don't you comment on the Zach Randolpg situation? Did you see the DA's report? Why don't you blog about what really matters with the team right now?

So much for keeping it real. Ya, Outlaw's the best. He'll make a wonderful PF. I'm sure he's going to beat out Zach, Mags, Raef and Aldridge to play at least 40 minutes a game. Go TO.

dang...Travis as PF? Never thought I would hear talk like that, but considering our options, if we rid ourselves of our current PF due to character problems...to uphold the 25 point pledge, he's a good candidate. I agree with cornelius thomas's comments but suspect that Outlaw has the work ethic to be able to bulk up, (a bit) to handle the pounding and double teaming, while retaining his athletisism.
